one can only imagine what the state legislature will come up with when it's totally control by the democracts. maybe a law giving indigents the right to any lawyer of their choosing, all at the tax payers expense. no wonder jim klurfeld wants one party democract rule of ny state. newsday has always loved criminals!

We have 10 times more lawyers than we need and only 1/2 the General practice MD's we need. You can't scratch your butt without a lawyer being in the way.
That many shysters doing a little pro bono time should suffice- especially since they plead out almost all cases.

The U.S. already has about 70% of the world's lawyers. Clearly, we have become the most overly litigious society on the face of the planet.

There's actually a simple and cost effective solution to this: TORT REFORM!

I'd like to see an independent opinion - The NYCLU as well as the judges have an agenda (more $$$). We need to eliminate the incentives for excessive litigation by having the loser pay. Less litigation will result in a decreased burden on society as well as lowered costs.

THE CONSTITUTION'S SIXTH AMENDMENT GIVES THOSE ACCUSED OF A CRIME THE RIGHT TO AN ATTORNEY. THE EQUAL JUSTICE PROVISION OF THAT DOCUMENT DEMAND THAT SINCE THE STATE HAS AN ATTORNEY TO PROSECUTE THE DEFENDANT,HE OR SHE SHOULD HAVE ONE TOO. A CRIMINAL CASE IS NOT A "TORT" (ROGER). AND (UN-CLEAR VISION) IF A PERSON IS TOO POOR TO HIRE AN ATTORNEY HOW THE HELL ARE YOU TO MAKE HIM/HER PAY FOR THE LITIGATION. N.Y. got some dumb people visiting it.

Why not look at the root of the problem, indigent people breeding like cockroaches, out-of-wedlock children being raised with no moral or ethical compass, a pervasive 'thug culture' that aggrandizes crime, guns and drugs. These are the reasons so many people are ending up needing these 'services'. And remember, it’ll cost the tax payer money to raise these 'kids' up until they are old enough to commit their crime, it costs the victims of their crime their money and possibly their health, it costs us money to have enough police to apprehend these criminals, and once convicted, it'll cost us money to incarcerate them.
The whole cycle is a losing proposition.... but I don't hear anyone willing to even talk about the root cause of our problems. Why do we always try to treat the symptoms?

I hate to admit it but Southbound is right. It seems the indigent have higher birthrates than the employed ranks. If you don't have to pay for your medical care, child care or housing there is no incentive to limit your family size. As to legal aid standards..... If you work full time at minimum wage you make too much for them to represent you free of charge. So only the underclass of indigents that make no money or hide their income qualify for assistnce.I learned this from grim experience when I was 21 and my landlord left me without a refrigerator for two months during July and August.
