Asia’s Corrugated Board Production Output Tops Global Rankings For 10 Consecutive Years
For several years now, the output of corrugated board production in Asia has sustained rapid growth. In 1995, the continent’s corrugated board production
output surpassed that of Europe for the first time. Eight years later, it overtook North America, to take first place in the global output charts – a
position it has held since then.
Today, Asia’s corrugated board production growth rate outpaces that of both Europe and North America. Moreover, it is distinctly superior to the world
average.
In 2002, production output of corrugated board in Asia was 41.3 billion sqm. This total rocketed to 71.5 billion sqm in 2007 and 103 billion sqm in 2012 -
putting growth rates for the past five and 10 years at 44% and 150% respectively.
For the global average, the respective growth rates in the past five and 10 years have been just 21% and 60%. In Europe, over the same periods, it has
hovered around 6% and 26%; while in North America there has been a dip of 3.9% and 1.4%.
Due to these disparate growth and decrease rates, production output of corrugated board in Asia has won an increasing proportion of the world market. In
2002, Asia accounted for 31.2% of total global corrugated board production. In 2004 and 2006, the proportion rose to 35.5% and 39.1%. In 2007 and 2009, it
was 41% and 46%. For 2011 and 2012: 48.5% and 48.8%. At the same time, Europe’s share of global corrugated board output has dropped from 29.9% in 2002 to
23.6% in 2012; while North America’s has slipped from 31.2% in 2002 to 19.7% in 2012.
As Asia’s biggest corrugated board producer, China is also therefore the world leader. In 1995, the production volume of corrugated board from China was
estimated at 7 billion sqm. By 1998, that figure exceeded 10 billion sqm. In 2002, it topped 30 billion sqm and seven years later, in 2009, it was over 40
billion sqm.
China’s production volume outstripped both Japan in 2002 and the US in 2008, pushing these two countries to third and second place, respectively, in the
global corrugated board production rankings.
