American Airlines does ALL of it's heavy maintenance overhaul in house at either Tulsa, OK, Alliance, TX or Kansas City, MO.
We also over haul all our own jet engines along with all the components.
We are marketing our services to the aviation industry and have bought in house aircraft from other airlines both domestic and foreign.
We can turn an aircraft and get it back in service to make money flying and not sitting in some MRO waiting for parts or some engineering approval to do some major repair.
We use FAA certified A&P mechanics.
All the other major US airlines all send some or all of there overhaul work out of the USA.

FYI,
CO M&R is represented by the IBT, no in-house maintenance (New contract after their 3 year BK in the late 80s and early 90s) with the exception of line-maintenance and some onesies/twosies.
Pre 911:
Ual and USAir represented by the IAM performed all maintenance in-house. Delta, no union, all maintenance in-house. NWA, was IAM then AMFA, some HMV, some component maintenance. AA, is represented by the TWU, all HMV, most maintenance in-house with a few exceptions. CO, unchanged.
Post 911:
USAir: represented by the IAM, after 2 BKs, still perform 50% HMVs, most back shops decimated, very little engine work to even mention.
UAL: represented by the IAM, switched to AMFA, now the IBT. No HMV, most back shops decimated, engine overhaul on the PW2000 and PW4000, Landing Gear on the B777 and B757, everything else outsourced.
Delta, no union, no HMV, not sure of the component and engine work left.
NWA, don’t know what is left?
CO, unchanged. AA, unchanged.

At American the Company and the TWU was the handwriting on the wall.
Work together or not work at all.
It's working and we are making money with 3rd party maintenance.
The long range object is to turn Tulsa and AFW into profit centers.
Just hope the oil industry doesn do us all in before we have a fighting chance.

Richard in Tulsa Too bad the AMFA and the IAM couldn't figure that one out.

Thanks to everyone for chiming in on the outsourcing issue. American is 100 percent American minus the 34 Airbus 300-600's

Just think we have an Aviation Sub Committee lead by a Democrat, I am thinking to myself...aren't they the party that protects the American Worker? Seems to me we need an investigation into this group who are part of the Aviation Sub Committee and the FAA. The Unions have been a failure at stopping this, why.....because they are weak and they are afraid of the Company. Perhaps we need to investigate the Unions too, where is CNN and the rest of the investigative media? OOPS sorry that is right they are out making sure Obama gets elected, thjen everything will be ok after that. After all Hoffa and his Teamsters are betting millions of union dues on Obama. The you have the IAM, another failed group that claims to have the best interest of the employees in mind. I laugh when I see the IAM offiacials, looks like some investigative report on the MOB on the History Channel. These "LEECHES" have bleed the American Worker long enough with thier failed promises and failed attempts to stop outsourcing. The Teamsters now at UAL will do no different than the failed IAM, but they did manage to get a few thousand people on the Teamsters bank accounts. Unions such a SCAM!!!

The OSM's are almost always in the shops and all the work is signed for by a Crew Chief (FAA licensed). The work done on the aircraft in the docks are done by FAA licensed mechanics (AMT's). Bottom line is we don't OUTSOURCE the work to forigen repair stations. Bob

Bob Bob, Not trying to pick a fight, just stating the facts. I admire AA having the majority of work performed in-house and specifically ‘not’ overseas. Wish all airlines could do it cost effectively. Here in SFO, the OSM concept can not work because of the cost of living. Best 2 U, Buckeye
