Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks made meeting online seem sweet-romantic even. Yet, somewhere between 1998's You've Got Mail and today, online dating has gotten a bad rep.

Dating sites have come a long way.

Back in the early 00s I used to look down on them. I used to say they were "for loosers who couldn't score in a brothel", lol, but uh, they really have come a long way.

I use them occasionally, but mostly just for fun. I could count on one hand the number of times I've ever met anyone online, and actually met them for real (in person).

But I'm not knocking them. Just be careful, if you use them.

Oh and never ever tell anyone ur real name, etc., until you have met in person.

And if you use ur real name on Facebook (most people do, however I DO NOT, and NEVER WILL!), then don't use anything that's Facebook-based.

The last thing you want, is someone with a romantic interest in you, having ur real name and city (that's usually enough to get a phone number, address, etc.), not to mention all the information on ur profile, etc.

Even if you have a gun in ur nightstand. What if he or she decides to just throw a molotov cocktail into ur house, and kill you and ur hole family??? All that lives with you, anyway. The rest they can just goto they're house (the people listed on ur "About" page") and kill them.

Just be careful, people, please! I don't like reading stories that something bad happened to someone good, because they did something dumb. Don't do that, please. Just be careful and think, ok?

And NEVER EVER, EVER send anyone any cash, nor anything of value. Never, ever!!! Just don't! I don't care what kind of a story they tell you, just don't do it!

For starters, why are they on a DATING site, asking people for donations? I mean what would be a good reason for someone to do that?

Dating is not about anything financial. PROSTITUTION is, however, presuming it is not a "escort" site, it is a DATING site, therefore such has no logical place.

Another thing, if it asks you about "Income" (some sites do, some don't), put "Rather Not Say" (or what ever it's called on each site).

I used to tell people (online and in person) who were potential dates that I was unemployed. I would say "I'm highly educated (which is true, btw), but at the moment I am not employed."

That's a VERY good way to weed out anyone who is either gold-digging, or just looking for someone who is wealthy, or "as wealthy as they are", etc. Or just anyone who CARES EITHER WAY about how much you make!

People like that are detestable human beings, and I sure wouldn't wanna date one! Good God!!! I wanna just get them out of the way as soon as possible, and move onto someone decent!!!

And one more thing: Don't use any dating websites that charge you, or require "upgrade" to use certain features! Just don't! Why would you? Their's enough free ones, which are actually better. Plus, would you wanna date someone who waists his/her money on those sites (when much-better free ones exist)? I sure wouldn't!!!

It's just common sense. All this stuff is. It's just common sense ;)

Oh and one last thing: Those stories described at the top (and beginning of the article) are WORKS OF FICTION. You are not a character from a movie. Or I presume you are not. I'm not, and most people are not.

(Don't even get me started about those stupid links from Topix about "Which ..... Character Are You?" If those get any stupider, I'm gonna start blocking the HTML element that houses them!!!)

Persons are Persons. Works of Fiction are Works of Fiction.
