Speak out against oil company greed

In the York Daily Record, Feb. 26, there was an article, "Exxon spill to top court," discussing Exxon's continual litigation to prevent it from having to pay for punitive damages relative to the 1989 Valdez oil ...

I agree with Mr Hohenshilt. Let me add this, there will be a day when Exxon-Mobil will no longer exist because oil will be gone! Oh but you say, "The oil companies will then have the new energy that we all will use in the future." Don't think for a moment that the oil companies are really out there trying to develop new forms of energy! Why should they...cut off their nose to spite their face? The new forms of energy will be developed by someone in his garage or small independent lab, much the same way Bill Gates did with the computer.

Just recently returned from a trip to Kansas, the most expensive gasoline I purchased was in York two weeks ago, not because of oil company greed. It is because of the taxes levied by our state and federal government. By the way gas is selling for 286 a gallon in Kansas. Their roads are better and seems like the schools are opened.

if you don't like the prices quit using it. No one is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to use gasoline.

And as the saying goes "your either a part of the solution or part of the problem"

what have you done to help the US become energy self sufficent ?

Everytime that a person develops an internal combustion engine that does not rely on fossil fuels, what happens? Big oil throws money at 'em and buys the plans then destroys it to ensure their record profits keep coming in. They lurk around science fairs in the same manner that flies do on shit. Every year we hear about this oil company or that oil company recording record profits well into the billions of dollars. Soon enough the American people will pressure their representatives for tighter restrictions and regulate the industry.
And why does this occur? So some fat pig wearing a 10 gallon cowboy hat can lay claim to higher bragging rights. We need to string them up by their scrotal sacs and take back this country.

Funny.. when Liberals talk about greed..they always go to business, or Big Oil.. what about BIG Unions? and the greed of those who are Union members? as Ford and GM how having cash cow suckers for workers have killed them vs Toyota.. Forget Oil, lets go after fat cat Unions, and Liberals.. Thats it.. lets go after BIG LAWYERS ?? yeah right..lol.. not on your life. That would be like pointing out that most killings of whites are caused by blacks.. wouldnt want that..truth be damned.

Still waiting to hear where that $80 billion went. Not to take sides with the oil companies, but I would like an honest answer to this question.

Big oil is the true terrorist in this country. They have successfully made record profits in a market that supposedly does not have the supply of oil t omeet the demand. The Corporate Oil scam is america's REAL Terrorist! Do everything you can to avoid wasting any money on wasted trips anywhere. Boycott vacations and buying anything extra from your paycheck. We all must make corporate America feel the sting of the rising price of oil that is needless.

Have you possibly noticed the number of vehicles on the road in the USA on any given day/night.
And we're going to punish Corporate America. What a laugh. The government is issuing $300 to each who applies, to stimulate the economy. And Mr.'Economics Specialist Jake' wants to boycott vacations and buying anything. Now that will really bring them to their knees. Hope that includes food for him.

Unions are the true terrorist in this country. If you were to start a business wouldn't you want to sell as much as whatever you were making. Consumers get what they want and the business owners make money. No one complains when the price of diamonds are high because of limited supply. Unions rely on extortion to earn their money. Their demand is if you don't pay us more we won't work for you but then they harass any other willing employee. There are plenty alternatives to oil but unions don't allow there to be alternatives.

I fear the ACLU, EPA, and most lawyer groups way before I fear producers such as business and Oil companies..
What does the ACLU, EPA, Lawyers and Union types do? do they produce a product? no.. that attach themselves to a product and suck it dry. Big Business, Big Oil..produce a product that keeps us out of the dark ages and keeps America the great country she is. But like everything else, Liberals have the bigger mouth so you hear their spew more often..."Producers" of the economy are too busy working to be bothered by this nonsensical crap. Speaking of which, since I’m not a Union member I must get back to work….

Opec blaims speculators as being the main cause of oil price rises, so why not find some way of introducing a law making oil price specualiting a punishable crime, as the damage and hurt to the world's economies and it's citizens is huge.

A couple of points that seem to be overlooked.

1) the average profit per gallon that an oil company earns at the pump is approx. 9 cents (for discovery, pumping, transportation to us, refinement, transportation to the pump and profit for the store owner

2)The local, state and federal taxes "earned" on gasoline is about 10x greater than the 9 cents earned by the oil company. These taxes are collected for the right to sell the oil, with no direct labor involved.

3) Exxon's massive 4th quarter profits is that you strive for in a capitalist society (majority of the earnings and growth were international). Exxon pays a very high corporate tax rate on the profit (approx 40-50%). The amount of taxes that Exxon paid in corporate taxes exceeds the amount of federal taxes that are paid by the bottom 50 % of our society (average approx. 3% of wages). Attacking and making sure that these companies do not earn as much money would have a significantly negative inflow of tax dollars to the government. It might feel good to choke off capitalistic "greed", but the result would be more harmful than the action.

How about the reduction of tax on gasoline, improve the discovery and delivery of gasoline and alternative fuels in our land, and become less dependent on hostile goverments (many OPEC members, especially Chavez) for our energy needs.

If I was making 100,000 a year, or a millionaire, I wouldn't be concerned about the gas prices either. But, I'am a working man making less than 40,000 a year the economy is down with no jobs to be found. Our President has allowed illegal immigrants to come in and take our jobs, while I have to pay higher property taxes, higher gas prices, and pay state and federal taxes. How can our President send our men off to fight a war to protect our country and at the same time allow our borders wide open for anyone to come on in. I do construction work which consists of alot of driving, the gas prices the way they are I can barely pay my bills and get to work. I might as well stay at home and draw welfare. I don't know how a single mom with childern making minumim wage can make it.

I was driving down Cassopolis st. in Elkhart today and with the gas prices so high the Swifty gas station was the lowest in town so everybody tried to get in there. The traffic was backed up all the way around the block and on both sides of the street. It was amazing no one was killed, semis trying to stop on a dime to miss parked cars on a major highway, finally the cops came to help the traffic jam. If the President doesn't do something soon it will be a disaster more than it already is to be an American. WHEN WILL THE WORKING MAN GET A BRAKE!!!!!!!!!!11

Karen, the working man will get a break; one broken off in him as soon as the tax breaks expire and the Dems raise your taxes. Gas prices were $3.00 per gallon in Europe in the '50's.

I feel you are ignorant to those who are dependent on oil to make a living. I am a farmer and rely on fossil fuels to plant, tend, harvest, and transport crops, as well as to feed livestock and transport them to market. I am definately oppressed by the price of oil and wish I could stop using it but parking the tractor and hitching a horse up to the plow is not going to get the job done. And may I ask you do you grow and raise all of your food that you eat in a year and do you do it without fuel? Or do you eat the food that I continue to provide to America through hard work and honesty despite barely making ends meet because oil corporations are taking my hard earned money and adding it to a bank account of billions of dollars also taken from other hard working americans.
