I worked there for 9 years and finally got out before all these cuts started. Just about every person I have known in the Cleveland area stores have been laid off, not just managers. They barely had enough people to run the store before, now they are screwed...they are going to "streamline" themselves right outta business. They also "streamlined" all the managers who stayed out of their vacations this year. There is clearly something else going on that OfficeMax is not telling us...anyone who works there that thinks they will have a future with the company is clearly in denial. This company will take everything it can from you and kick your butt right out the door when they are done, without thinking twice! Dont make the mistake thinking anyone there cares about you, they only care about themselves.
I was an ASM at OfficeMax for almost 4 years. Everyone is wondering why I'm not taking the layoff so hard. I told them that I am finally stress free for the first time in nearly 4 years!! I can breathe!
With that said, I believe the whole thing could have been handled differently. They should have kept us working for another month, while they were training new managers, so that they wouldn't be screwed come back to school time. Guess they don't really think ahead. It will be interesting to see what kind of numbers the stores put up this year, compared to other years.

Hey 1 in 2700...can't believe you would say that no one else but Impress cared about you guys ...especially one of your only democrat buddies in the store ..I just didn't think that they would really let that much experience go...think about it we lost over 30 years of experience all at once ...Its gotta hurt ...but the bad thing is how its gonna hurt company wide ...we are one of the stores that at least has some full time associates left ...probably not for long, but they will probably use us for BTS...we will most likely join you soon ...we miss u "PAPPY"...hope it all works out for the best..As for us our suffering is just beginning .....

Hey 1-2700!! Well, let the Stress Begin!!! It started on a roll yesterday!! If you actually got to sit down for a minute you had the only "key-holder" left fussing about it. I'm sure that's because she is being worked to death like the rest of us that's left!!! Has anyone seen those "New Hires"for the sales floor and the other 2 key-holder positions yet?? They seem to be MISSING!!! Omax stock shot up right after the layoffs!! Did anyone notice that???

I could have told you that. I called that as soon as this was starting to go down. Best of luck to you because I'm sure it's not over yet.

I to am one of OMax's lost. I gave 10 long dedicated years, working many hours on my time, with no thank yous.
When it came time for the interview with the DM, I knew i was screwed. I guess the script was not followed. I transferred from another district 2 yearsd ago, and when the interview started it was how things may or may not have been done in my old district. Somehow I knew the ax was soon to fall on me.
I was previosuly the Sales manager, and when we lost the Logistics Manager last October I was put in that position. I never applied for it, and for that matter it was never even posted as an open position. In the interview the DM said he knew that the changes were going to happen for some time. MMMMMMMM is that why the put me in Logistics?
I worked hard for OMax. I had many loyal customers who came to me. I handled many issues with misssing freight to keep the customer comming back to our store. I truly loved my job, the challanges, the BS, I somehow thought if I did a great job I would have a job for many years. NOT!!!! Now I find that I am telling people not to shop at Office Max. But with all the "Great Part Timers" they will have Who will want to!!!

I'm with you, all the way. I won't shop there anymore either. But, when thinking of applying at Staples or Office Depot, I find that I can't bring myself to do it. For so many years, I have talked to customers and heard what bad customer service they have, and I can't bring myself to work for either one.

*sigh* and Hugs to you "10 long years for nothing"

I didn't get mine either. Looks like OfficeMax failed to give out the correct information AGAIN!
I spoke to another ex associate and she had talked to her old store manager who now is saying next pay period. I think they are trying everything they can to get the great associates back that they let go. FOR A LOT LESS MONEY. This associate is going back to Omax next week.

Got my final pay on July 3rd (direct deposit), waiting for the 1st severance check (either July 11th or 18th - whatever) and filed my first "unenjoyment claim" Yahoo!!! As for the timeliness of the payout, if you were over 39 , there was a 10 day revocation period that had to pass before it would even be started - which was over Saturday (or maybe Monday the 7th if they count business days?)Let's just wait and see.
It's been a week and haven't heard from anyone at the store so they must be OK - or maybe not. Well, it's not a surprise to me that the stock shot up after the layoffs - standard Stock Market BS, it will drop again once sales fall due to lack of experienced and fresh employees on the sales floor. With the price of gas over $4, do they really expect people to work for $7.50/hour or lower? Or even $12.00/hour for "specialists"?

As for me, I have been totally "stress free" too - sleeping in, staying up late, seeing my family - I actually got to go to my annual family reunion this year - I didn't have to work!!! Oh, I know I'll have to go back to work somewhere someday, but I have time to decide what is best for me, not for someone else's "bottom line" unless it's mine too.

So those of us who took are no longer OMAX lackeys - hang in there, relax, enjoy the summer if you can - things happen for a reason and I, for one, believe it's for the best.

Has anyone heard anything about the severance? My normal payday would have been tomorrow, so I assumed it would come in the mail today. It didn't.

Sorry StickMax Flunkie.I certainly didn't mean you or a couple of others on the Omax side. I was really trying to point out the quickness of the dismissal.Hell! once you said " no i'm not working here for that kind of pay cut" you pretty much were dismissed and shown the door.Nobody was given the chance to say goodbye or anything.I guess they thought it would be to disruptive to say goodbye to people that you have worked with for over ten years. The people I worked with shared their lives with me and I with them.It just wasn't and isn't right. See you all soon.

I was very lucky to have the associates that I did... many whom I haven't even seen in 3 years joined together with my present associates and threw a surprise "support" get together for me. It was awesome! That is something that OfficeMax can't take away from me!
