Below is a link to an article I wrote recently about re-designing a non-profit website. It's helpful things when approaching this project. The 5 tips:

1.) Clearly define the goals for your new website
2.) Determine an appropriate budget to devote to the project
3.) Determine your primary audience(s)
4.) Think long-term
5.) Commit to the continual development of your website
