Hope sells. How much "research" without progress can be tolerated? So far, all the medical progress has to show is to delay the inevitable. Better diagnostics, treatments, and drugs. Thing how damaging a "cure" would be to the economy. Polio was the last disease "cured". Our inability to make serious progress is disappointing to say the least.
