Rewarding donors with board appointments

Are there any legal or ethical reasons NOT to offer donors of a certain level an invitation to join the non-profit's board of directors? I'm sure this is fine on a private, individual basis, but what about actually publicizing that if you donate at a certain level you automatically get the invitation?
