The article states "The ball turret, it was the safest place on the plane."
I guess this might be so, relatively speaking. My cousin, Kenneth Divil, was a ball turret gunner on a B 17 when it suffered a direct flack hit to the ball turret during a bombing mission over Cologne. He was killed as a result. Here are links to photos of the plane after it, miraculously, returned to its base in England.
An interesting note about this plane. After returning to its base, the fore was salvaged and "married" to the aft section of another damaged B 17.*(42-97843)
