Must be salaried. I do see your point. Today's unions are a far cry from what they were in grandpa's day. Too many slackers riding on the backs of the hard worker.

DEAR JEFF H
I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE CONNECTION BETWEEN RAY MCGEE AND YOURSELF IS NOR DO I CARE. I AGREE WITH YOU ON ONE THING, THE UNION WAS WRONG TO RECOMEND SELLING THE CO. TO RAY MCGEE SO WE WOULD AVERT THIS AND LOOK WHAT HAPPENED, ITS ALMOST CLOSED ANYWAY! 5 YEARS AGO WE PAID NOTHING FOR HEALTH CARE NOW IT'S OVER $50 PER WK. CO-PAY RETIREE BENEFITS CUT IN HALF! A PENSION PLAN PAYING $17 PER YEAR OF SERVICE AND YOU HAVE THE NERVE TO SAY IT'S THE UNION? GROW UP AND GROW A BRAIN FOR YOURSELF PAL AND STOP REPEATING WHAT YOU HEAR YOU IDIOT!
THE BRASS FELL BECAUSE OF RAY MCGEE AND LARRY FORD'S PERSONAL GREED. FACT! I WAS THERE AND WITNESSED IT. JERKS LIKE YOU HAVE NO CLUE. ROT IN HELL YOU SCUMBAG!

It's not about providing a good wage, moron, it's about competing in a global market. Business exist for one reason - to turn a profit. If they don't do that, they go out of business. Unions drive companies out of business.
Why the anti-business sentiment that is so rampant on these boards? Capitalism made America great. Anti-capitalists (anti business types) must hate America.
Part of competing in whatever market you're in is whether anyone will buy your product. If your product sucks, the customer will go elsewhere.

It has been shown that happy companies, meaning that both management and workers are happy, make a better product. The original principle of unions was supposed to give the workers stability in their income; knowing there will be money to pay the bills is good for morale. I won't argue that unions HAVEN'T gone overboard in many ways. But if the country goes to war (tho the world is stable, shouldn't happen), wouldn't you rather have the work force living HERE, and already skilled?

If the business is doing great, there's more money for raises and bonuses for everyone who helped, the entire pay scale. But my argument is that management not only wants its paycheck first, it keeps wanting more and more of the profits, meaning the workers get less and less. Outsourcing is just another way to do this. And trust me, outsourcing doesn't guarantee a good product or even an average one.

Let's move up a rung. Senior management decides there's still too much money paid to workers in wages and benefits. Let's outsource our project analysts and business analysts. We can always get some fresh faces just out of school, won't have to pay them retirement benefits, and they don't know enough about the Real World, they'll to do a good jobs for the scraps we plan to pay them (though I'm not sure how someone who doesn't know the Real World can do a good job). Around this stage of Senior management's streamline, middle management will be taking a huge hit.

So here we are, a huge work force, everyone trying to hold two or three service industry jobs just to pay the rent, for food, and medical care. And kiss off higher education.

If you want to argue this, go for it. Tell me how the market will balance itself. Explain what will happen to the luxury spending or doesn't our economy need this? BTW, this is not meant to be mean, I expect you'd be among those affected finacially.

One more thing. In this social pyramid we call an economy, the top of the food chain is a bit higher than senior management. I grew up with these people. A few observations:
1) They don't know how to do a job, they know how to pay someone else to do it for them.
2) They want the money back. They're miffed they lost so much of it with the coming of the industrial revolution and labor laws. They see no problem with a return to... well, picture Bob Cratchit with his piece of coal while Ebenezer Scrooge does payroll in the next cubicle.
2a) Some are happy just to have the money return to the deserving rich.
2b) Other would prefer you suffer while the money is "returning."

Dear God, and I'm an optimist?

2) They want the money

the only one getting the carrot is ray mcgee and his henchmen.the board of directors and the outside trustee of the esop never had the best interest of the employees when they recommended to have a vote to sell and it was turned down. then they would'nt take no for an answer ,so they force another vote in less tan 2 weeks by telling everyone it was the right thing to do. so now here we are having an ungratful owner selling off everything thats not bolted done , to build up his bank book before he trashes 80 people lifes and about another 200 family members. so in closing the moarle of the story is, better off getting every thing you can because there are no gaurantees in life
