It's a nice idea, but it's frustrating that one has to pay for volunteering abroad so often. Also feels somewhat self-indulgent to use volunteering as an excuse to travel.

Working or volunteering abroad is a great option, unless you really have to make money for a living.

Hey,

Great article! I have encouraged all of my friends to try out teaching overseas as I had the chance to do it a few years ago and it was amazing. I had the good fortune of having a friend tell me his cousin's experience in the beautiful beach town of Busan, South Korea and I knew I had to go there and try it out. I tried finding a job on my own through dave's esl, but eventually came across Footprints Recruiting and they did a great job helping me out. They placed me in the city I requested and also made sure to follow up with me once I was over there. If you can try teaching abroad it's the best opportunity you'll find in these terrible times.

I should have mentioned that the reason I went through Footprints Recruiting was because their services were free and my school gave me a salary, reimbursed the airfare and paid for my housing. Sweet deal.

If you have student loans this just isn't an option.

You can always defer your loans and if you teach in Asia or the Middle East you'll make good money.
