There's work to do

Why would anyone take an $8.00 per hour job when unemployment and welfare can suckle them for years?
Why aren't our students qualified to read a ruler when they graduate from high-school?(why Dr. Barber?) We only spend $8,000 per student each year! Why shouldn't people rejoice over $7 and $8 per hour jobs in the service industry? Erie has thrown away its $20 per hour manufacturing in place of $7. We aimed for the bottom and hit a bullseye. |

Business owners are taxed so much that they cannot afford to pay $20 and make a profit on their goods. It really stinks that small and large businesses have to suffer because they have to take care of everyone and everything. Maybe if they were allowed to actually profit, they could pay more money to workers.

Yea RRight!! name one CEO who makes a million plus per year and says "i dhould take apay cut so I can pay ny employees more". One just name One. |

I am an Engineer with over eight years of experience. I have sent my resume into them several times. I have never heard from them. GE wants to hire from outside of our region; I believe that they believe our local talent pool is only good enough for labor.

You could be right about the bigtime businessmen. I am referring to the ma and pop stores. I own a small business and there are months where I can't pay myself so that I can keep my employees paid. If you've never had to pay taxes like a small business owner, you won't understand. Unfortuantely, people like you think that all businesses are rich. That isn't the case..but the small ones get taxed like the big ones do. I am telling you...I will have to layoff employees if my taxes go up. I just can't cut any more corners. |

I also have a friend who is part of a family that owns a local grocery store. Everyone at the top, including her, gave up salary when the minimum wage was raised. The store was also forced to eliminate jobs. You can't compare us all to oil companies.

Rather than be rewarded for being contributors to our communiies...hiring jobs and feeding famlies, we are taxed to thepoint where there is no incentive to keep the doors open. If Hussein Obama is elected president, it will be the end of small business in America.

Sorry, but I know three local people who got hired late last year at GE. You need to get your resume checked. Send it to me -- I see my share of bad ones! Once I edited someone's resume and sent it back to them with a letter saying they might want to think of changing their resume before sending it out again, and wishing them luck in getting a job. Do you think I got a thank you? No, of course not.... |

Would you look over mine? I'm serious here..... |

I find this article very objective and helpful.
I have heard others say, "People can be functioning alcoholics and functional drug abusers". Because of this statement I do ask myself, "How can they be?" I do know that some people use prescription's that have been prescribed for them to maintain/control their own level of the pain they personally experience to live a somewhat normal way of life in order to survive and function and that's OK for this person. Although, this does not answer the question for the person who uses alcohol and drugs to the point of abusing them self. I'm not trying to be judgemental just asking a question. |

The problem isn't the lack of jobs available it is the lack of jobs that pay enough to support a family. Most jobs in the tool and die industry want to start a person at $10-which might have been OK 10 years ago or even 5 years ago but in todays world you cannot support a family on that. Once you take away taxes and health insurance and now the cost of gas just to get to work and home again you are actually making less than minimum wage.

7% of the Erie workforce is unemployable! Always has been and always will be. And maryw the starting wage for an experienced tool maker (not a machinist) is $15-$20/hr.

I think when the minimum wage is raised, it dlutes what everyone makes, because the cost of everything goes up. I wouldn't be opposed to a tiered minimum wage based on age -- a 16yo at McDonald's doesn't have the same needs as a 24yo with a family. |
|
|
Minimum wage was never meant to support a family. It was intended for college students and high school kids.

There is one other MAJOR issue this article neglects to mentions as to why jobs go unfilled...that some companies don't pay enough. If you lost your job and are collecting unemployment, sometimes you make more on unemployment than actually working at some lower paying companies.

Electrical Engineer. Have been interviewed numerous times. Never hired at GE. I know it is not me. My resume is extremely strong. Just a thought.

What? You want to be paid enough to survive and raise a family? what are you a c..c..c...communist? |
Spoken like a tried and true Liberal Democrat! These are entry level jobs PAL, if your collecting unemplyoment then you are using the system so quit crying! 25 years ago I made $3.10/hr and thought there has to be something better. Yes when you work hard and take chances you would be surprised!!!!! In 2 years I bought the place, never looked back. When I hear or see people like you I think, you should be making minimum wage! Just remember I am paying for you to get that unemployment, Lazy fk!!!!!!!!!! |

Funny thats not what has been offered recently-like in the past two weeks. And even $15 an hour after taxes and all the other expenses is not enough to pay a mortgage, a small car payment, utilities, insurance and groceries. |
