Why would the rental companies charge a fee if a renter decided to place the car on the super ferry. Another example of the rental agencies charging additional fees. Anyone who places their car on the Superferry may have to swim back when the Superferry hits bad weather and cancels as they usually do.

What happens when the Super Ferry shuts down during bad weather and you are stuck with a rental car on another island? Who ends up making money are the rental car agencies.

If the ferry can't get the car back to the origianl location then it will cost the to get it eventually. Personally, I think it is stupid to even consider putting a rental on the ferry, just turn it is and get a different one whe you arrive on the next island.

It's common practice to have a fee assessed when returning a vehicle other than where it was rented, especially if it's a distant location . This is as it throws the balance of vehicles off and the company may end up having to send vehicles back at their expense to rebalance the stock. Also, some rental agencies are franchises, not corporate owned. This means the cars are not interchangeable with other locations even if they waive the same flag. There are major benefits to sending a rental car. For one, you don't have to schlep your luggage out of the car. Superferry doesn't care if you pack your car out, there are no additional charges beyond the car transport fee itself. You just literally roll on and enjoy the ride. Cost savings with a weekly rental rate are also strong factors, rather than having to break a rental down into daily rates, which are considerably more expensive.

I can hardly wait for the ferry to come to Kawaihae. Wild and wooly out island drivers get to play "wow..look at that !" at 20 mph in Oahu while rural types get to play "bumper cars" with speed demons from Oahu. Leave the baggage and the car at home , walk on...no worries. Swannie2101

The SF didn't bring the frogs but the company who did is still in business and still operating in the same manner yet everyone says the SF is evil....The worst invasive species from what I have seen is the So CA folks moving there and driving up the real estate prices beyond belief then imposing their tree hugging ways on everyone else..

steve808 wrote: BEWARE !!!! T he Coqui frogs are coming to an area near you Be the first on Oahu to have your sleep annoyed and your neighborhood devalued Right! Because the rental cars were originally brought to each island by Fairies who (not to be confused with the Ferry)who carefully disassemble each car to make sure that no Coqui's are coming along for the ride. Likewise, when the car companies need to shuttle a car between island, those same Fairies come and check for Coqui's. Go down to a port on your island and look at the YB lot, you'll be surprised how many cars are there - both rental fleet cars and new cars. And aside from a cursory "Ok, it's clean" check, they don't get any inspections.

And we're not going to Oahu to look at the sights -- all the good places have been paved over.

They're going to end up on other islands using that same mode of transport. Why hitchhike on the underbody of a car when they can ride in froggy comfort in a load of lumber?

I read all this stuff four or five times, and have yet to have a clue what all the whining is about. Locals don't rent cars because Hertz, et al, don't take Food Stamps. And don't knock the frogs - unlike the bums, drunks, and homeless haunting the place, at least the frogs let you know where they are.

Young brothers has a big barge that transports all kinds of vehicles from island to island. No one is protesting that barge. No one is protesting Matson or NCL or Aloha airlines which transports flowers and other agriculutural stuff from island to island. None of them are inspecting their stuff any more intensly than the SF. To question the SF and not all of the other means of commercial transportation which is just as bad, is hypocritical. and by the way, unless you own a car rental company, why does anyone care what they charge and why. it is up to them. if you don't like it, don't rent their cars.

Swannie2101 While I do support Hawaii Superferry for providing an alternative method of interisland transportation, I do have to wonder what will be done about the inevitable traffic on the Queen K highway from Kawaihae to Kona and/or Hilo. Will that highway be widened to four lanes? I seriously wonder if the existing two-lane highway can adequately handle that traffic, although it would be temporary and only once a day. Certainly something for the powers-that-be to think about.

what a zoo Oahu, and now Maui is becomming Just wait and see what a mess this barf barge is creating on a beautiful island in the Pacific. You should have jumped in the water in protest..anything...to protect your island from "BIG MONEY FROM THE MAINLAND." You are going to loose your soul and only then will you realize that Kauai was the only island that had the courage and passion to KEEP THIS MESS OUT!!

This is really a moronic idea. If some one wanted to rent a vehicle one way, why would one rent one in Honolulu and ship it to Maui. Would not it be cheaper to rent one on Maui and not pay the shipping charges and vice versa?

DOT plans on using the same two-lane highway. Got gridlock? No planning! Pathetic!

Great that the continental USA drop off option was extended to Hawaii. It’s an option that is sometimes exercised when say one drives from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. Of course it does cost! Perhaps with rising fuel prices there may be a market, one day.
