583 would be 14k, and 542 would be 13k, Since your piece sounds like it may be "Black Hills gold",(colored gold) I am unsure as to your mark, Black hills gold is usually 10k due to the alloys used to create the different colors of gold.....Not exactly positive on why your piece is marked 586 unless it is an artisan piece and they "averaged" the gold purity throughout the piece to come up with 586.....I have never seen this personally, but I have heard tales.....Sorry I could not be of more help.

Take it to a local jeweler. Pawn shops don't have the professional training. I took a piece of jewelry to a pawn shop once and they told me it was gold filled. I took it to one of my local jewelers. It was solid 14k gold and was appraised for $1000 and I have the certificate of the appraisal. Never ever take your jewelry to a pawn shop.
And I have had a reputable Jeweler write me a diamond appraisal for a piece of facetted glass $12,000 to be precise, any human is capable of making a mistake. Im sure the testing equipment the pawn shop had on site was just giving false readings which does happen fairly commonly with most brand name gold testers, no reason to "never take your jewelry to a pawnshop" that's just disrespectful...

only way to tell for certain is have it tested. You can look for telltale signs that it may be real though, Here are a few, First, you already passed, since you say that it is marked 14Kt, next, check with a magnifying glass to see if each link is completely closed,(no split on the end of the link where it was mechanically closed), Real gold will not have "open" links, they will be closed completely with no crack showing. As I have mentioned here before, as long as you do not care that if it is NOT gold, you can soak it for a few hours in toilet bowl cleaner, the liquid, not the gel,(the HCL,{hydrochloric acid} in the cleaner will corrode most metals excepting for gold, platinum, chrome etc) If your item after a few hours looks the same as when you put it in the acid, without discoloration, then odds are that you have real gold. Sno Bowl, TiDbowl or any such cleaner will do.
Hope this helps.

The only way is to melt it down, but of course it will destroy the jewellery.
Take it to a specialist, they will test a tiny, tiny part of the material to tell you what it is, you don't have to destroy the piece.

On Father's Day I Purchased A Pre-engagement Ring For My Significant Other From A Local Jewelery Store. The Ring Appears To Be Yellow Gold, However I Forgot To Ask. My Man Likes It A Lot, So What Should I Do?
Drag your item across ceramic plate. A black streak means your gold is not real, whereas a gold streak indicates your item is genuine.:)

I am allergic to non gold jewelry. And I hate it .... I can't wear FUN jewelry
It is an allergy I developed after my teens.
My husband is aware of this and tries to buy me something gold ( once in a while )
Either his is unable to explain the severity of this or the store does not understand.
Recently he bought a necklace .... The only marking is Peru on one side and AU on the other
Any thoughts ? Thank you in advance!

Just found an old necklace with the engraving UKI 375? Can anyone please enlighten me on what it means? The necklace itself is of a goldish-copper tinge, with a purple/black pearl pendant. Thankyou.
