Once again, I will post the common gold purity marks. Hope it is helpful.

9K =.375 (%35.7 pure
10K=.416
14K=.585
18K=.750
22K=.916
24K=%100 pure gold.

Silver purity marks ranging from .800- to .924 are considered "coin Silver"
.925 of course is Sterling.

Platinum (which some mistake for silver), are as follows.

850,
900
950
and 999

Platinum is MUCH harder than silver, and does not tarnish as silver does.

Sorry, I seem to have switched around the numbers for 9K gold, the .375 is $37.5 percent pure, and not %35.7 as I mistakenly posted.
Sorry for the mixup.

I find this and the previous interesting because the only elements that are naturally magnetic are Iron (Fe), Nickel (Ni) and Cobalt (Co). The slight attraction you feel from impure gold/silver are because any combination of the those metals are present. BTW, any metal becomes a magnet when applied with an electric current.

My grandmother gave me a necklace 45-50 years ago. It is obviously gold because it hasn't turned brown of flaked but I'm not sure exactly was type of gold. It is stamped "Italy" and below that "18" I assumed it meant 18K but I recently learned Italy uses a three digit number to id the gold. Does this means it is not gold but another metal? Thanks in advance for your help

I have a necklace marked 925 italy on one side and a Y on the other side. It looks like silver. Can anyone tell me how i could tell if it is real and how much it would b worth

Des, If your item is marked 925, then is is likely sterling silver, The "Y" also is likely a makers mark. Pure silver is just about $27 an ounce,, I would need to know the approx weight of your piece in order to give you an accurate value, Remember, "sterling" silver is only %92.5 pure silver, and you should get a price based on that figure, Also remember that you will not recieve the actual "spot price" for your silver, what you would likely get from a reputable buyer would be whatever the spot price was minus about %15.
