I use an oxidizing acid (sulfiric) it will turn sterling silver and brass, black and will not wash off, It will turn nickel black and will wash off, It does not turn gold black at all, lower karot gold like 10K will turn darker color slowly because the high content of copper in it. Usually you will need to take a file and cut through the surface on an edge of the ring to break through what might be gold filled or plating to get a true reading. If the cut place turns black and the rest does not it is gold filled. I have been a jeweler for 35 years.

Ok i bought a 24k chain off the internet. The backing says 24k GB and the other side says SG. I took it to a pawn store and they did the acid test on it. They told me it wasnt real, but it didnt attract to the magnet either. Nor did i see the mark the acid would leave behind. The thing ways about 2.5 ounces and i'm hoping its real. SO i can hock it or scrap it for money.

A good way to test the gold, especially 24 karat is to take it to a jeweler and have him anneal (heat treating it until itís near melting) it. This will uncover the true color of the metal. If it is true 24 karat, the color of the gold will be yellow, if not, the original color will appear. For example, its copper and its gold plated, the gold plating will burn off when you anneal the item, and whatís left is the red copper finish. Well itís a good solution the check if its real, the con about is that, if it isnít real, the jeweler might not be able to gold plate the merchandise back to its original form.

925 = sterling silver, which is silver with rhodium plating. Made in Italy, is where the item is manufactured. Its doesn't mean its real or not. Look for the karat stamp or the percent stamp. The stamps are as followed.
10k =.416% gold or 416
14k =.585% gold or 585
18k =.750% gold or 750
21k =.875% gold or 875
22k =.916% gold or often stamped 90 or 916
24k =.999% gold or often stamped 965 or 999
silver is stampled 925
platinum is 965

Thats so true... the other day received a bracelet stamped 14 karat in the jewelry store. When i soldered the item, it turned out to be silver. I hate it when that happens, because it ruins the image of all jewelry stores, loses trust, and also its hard to replate the item back to its original color.

Doesn't all 14k. 18k, etc. gold jewelry have to be stamped as such?

yes it does... but there are some people out there that think its nice to cheat people. They take silver and stamp it 14k instead of 925. Thats why you should only buy jewelry from jewelry stores.
