It's important to remember that in the run-up to the defeat of marriage equality in North Carolina, all the biggest, best, and brightest organizations in that state were all opposed to codifying discrimination into that state's constitution, but it won anyway.
So despite support from key organizations, businesses, and celebrities, bigotry can still win at the ballot box (which, in itself, is an argument for why marriage equality and civil rights should never be an issue for voting).
