In office, professionalism trumps romance

Dating a co-worker is rarely a good idea, but with people spending more time at work, it happens.

My wife and I met when we were both reporters on the same newspaper. Everyone socialized together, but we managed to keep quiet the fact that we were actually dating -- no small achievement in an office full of people who gossip well enough to earn a living.

When we decided to tie the knot, we asked our editor if that would create a problem with the paper's no-nepotism policy. "Of course not," he said. "What would we do, charge you with matrimony?"

Within four years, we'd both moved on to other jobs -- but we're still married 28 years later.

I think it is absolutely a must that the work place stays a work place and that all romantic "inklings" be avoided. Mark the day down that the romance door is opened and you will probably see work performance declining. It is one of the most important actions in the work place...professionalism.
