Employee resigns then wants job back few days later

So yeah, just wondering what the thoughts are about bringing someone back who just resigned to work for another company. Apparently the first day on the new job didn't go so well. My thought was that he was discontent with our company enough to look for other work initially. The fact that he doesn't like his new job is not my problem, let's move on and go our separate ways. The only thing is that we need employees pretty seriously and this guy is already trained and ready to go. As an employee he was OK, but called in sick noticeably more often than others. Not the worst employee but probably if I had the luxury of discharging for anything that annoyed me he would go due to calling in sick often. Thanks for your comments!
