Why don't they just pay people more so we can AFFORD to stay in our homes?! So many places in Koolau Loa-North Shore are up for sale & going for vacation rentals to outsiders.

The focus needs to be on raising people's incomes and wages-so we can AFFORD Housing & not become second class citizens stuck in affordable housing ghettos for generations!

Real COMMUNITY-FOCUSED Development:Whole Sale Market for Local Farmers, Crafts Coop, Music/Recording Studio, Community Commercial Kitchen, a Discount Store, 1 Starbucks at empty Retail spaces in Hauula or Kahuku, Expand Kahuku Library to a High-Tech Rural Learning Center w/ Business Training, etc would help our Community to use their many gifts & talents to AFFORD housing-and keep it Country.

More Affordable Housing is good for Developers! Higher Wages & Incomes, Training & Resourses and real Community-Focused Development is better for Local People-then we can afford to live where we want! What would be God's Best for our Community?- Dream & GO for it!

The housing project was estimated to cost between $300 million and $400 million, with infrastructure alone expected to total $200 million.

==========

You mean to tell me that the road, sewer, water and electricity would cost $200 million for 650 homes? That comes out to $307,000 per home.

Oh well at least the hotel will bring jobs tot he region.

Housing is always available, just NOT in the area that is our first choice. Most of us who live in the country drive into town for work.

It will be the reverse situation where those who work in the country (BYUH, PCC, etc.) will have to live in town and drive out to work. That's life.

This is a joke! Modular homes could be built for less than $50K all over the islands. There is definitely something going on behind the scenes here.

The Laie Community Association President Pane Meatoga is still in dream land. What has he done to represent the people of Laie?

How can he think LCA can stand on its own two feet when HRI chopped off his legs a long time ago? He's afraid to even question HRI who controls this whole Laie community.

HRI is able to break their word to the community about helping with affordable housing because the LCA is useless. HRI knows that they would not get any opposition. HRI also know that they can build their new hotel with no questions asked.

When is the LCA President going to wake up and step aside so someone else can do a better job of representing the community. He only had 41 votes from the whole community of Laie. And he still wants to cling on to be LCA President. Does he want to be LCA President till he dies of old age?

Amen to that. There are lots of houses all over the island.

But Hawaii Reserves, Inc. should not have exploited those people who trusted them. They believed HRI when it said that if the Laie community supported them in the campaigns for sewer, lawsuits, etc; they would help with affordable.

Once again the people got lied to. HRI achieved their commercial plans with community support and then dumped their promises. HRI should just get out of Laie and out of the lives of the people.

Laie people can always form their own community association if Laie Community Association is such a rubber-stamp. Who has the courage to speak up in this weird community where every one is afraid. This as sounds like the RLDS compound in Texas. Everybody living in fear and total obedience.

Its really hard for Developers to get investors interested when all they read is that the community is against developement. Keeping the country country and so on.
it makes investors not want to extend a hand when there is so much dang red tape with the city and State. The people wanting this should Stand Up and say We back you.

Turtle bay will cost about 600+million to buy out for sure.

That moeny could build a heck of a lot of homes...don't you think?

$600 million to Turtle Bay? Are you turtle bay management? The papers reported Lingle is hiring an appraiser to value the place. Let's wait and see.
" A heck of a lot of homes" will destroy the rural area of this north shore and tourists will go somewhere else. We are going to have 'a heck of affordable homes" and then what comes next? Food stamps?

Very interesting. Someone from Maui.
I've heard this salesman solicit in Hauula before and he talked about the great need to provide affordable housing for his workers. He bragged about his "big" company but aren't most of them part-timers? He publicized in their own newsletter Kaleo about buying a property for time-shares. Since when can owners sell time shares in Kaaawa? And then they talked about kahuku football and this and that.
Where is the substance to all these besides it sounding like your 'used-car salesman" uncle trying to impress you to sell you something.
Who exactly owe this piece of land?
Will Kahuku be big enough for house all those in-laws, and the uncles and aunties and cousins from New Zealand and islands of the sea?
He would need a separate village just for that.
Show me the money!

Keep in mind that the amount of red tape and state involvement in these so called "affordable" housing projects is so atrocious that any developer with the slightest bit of common sense would stay clear of such a disaster.

Just look at that twin tower affordable project in waipahu, cant even sell out because the requirements the state has for applicants is so contradictory. For example, you cant make more than a certain percent of the median income per year to qualify, but not making that amount pretty much kills any chance you have to secure financing, DUH!

Doesn't matter what the State wants to buy it for...its what the seller is willing to sell it for..Remember Oaktree did not ask the State to buy it. Don't worry Kamehameha Schools is building in Haleiwa.

You are right. My crew can put one up onsite in a week or so. Just get a piece of land, and I'll get you a 3 bedroom 2 bath modular ranch home for under $60K! Don't let these fools rip you off with their absurd prices.
