Too bad the workers got a union in...they probably got all sorts of promises from the union which can rarely deliver these days. Be careful what you wish for.

The Autoworkers Union is dying (like most non governmental employees unions) and is gasping for a high profile event.
Let them go back to Michigan or wherever Toyota builds their cars now and protest there.
Unions are in no small part responsible for their own demise.

The DOT should say no! This area currently has road improvement construction and adding demostrators will only heighten the level of danger in the area.

The Unions destroyed American manufacturing and the municipal unions are destroying Connecticut Towns ...... the Casino should tell the unions to BUTT OUT .... before they ruin yet another Connecticut industry

Now that the economy is in trouble and the casinos are feeling the pinch, let's see how they treat their employees. It's very easy to treat your employees well when you're making money hand over fist.

It would be troublesome for many visiting dignitaries and celebrities to cross a picket line, as many are members of a union. Sure wouldn't look too good. Unions are only as good as the people in them. Sort of like politics.

since when have lanes on a public roadway ever been shut down for a political protest? i am guessing it is because they would otherwise be on private, that is, tribal property, there. are there no public sidewalks or shoulder areas?
the roadway should not be an option. if they can't stand somewhere safely, the answer should just be NO. they will be the first ones to sue the state, i.e. the taxpayers, if someone is injured on state property.

Why don't these unions follow the manufacturing jobs to China and organize those workers?
|
|
unions blah

The dealers should never have voted to unionize. The blood sucking UAW has already started. These workers are hourly plus tips. How can they make a days pay when instead of working their putting their lives in danger protesting on a busy two lane road under construction. Wait until the union starts taking more and more of their pay and don't deliver on their promises. The time of the unions has passed.

Permit Please

Give them the permit already! Connecticut has a long democratic tradition of protest. This isn't China or Iran.

Well the Foxwoods' union busting public relations contractors are working over time on this blog. Peacefully protesting is as American as apple pie as are unions. The DOT denial shows that Governor Rell is bought and sold by wealthy interests such as the casino. People should be outraged that the casinos have spent millions of dollars to deny the Foxwoods workers their basic human right, enshrined in U.S. and state law, to form a union. Our democracy is becoming a dictatorship of the rich.

Would it be too much too ask "what is it that you are protesting"?

A stste agency that has done something right? Great. I do not blame them for refusing to grant a permit. Closing a portion of a highway....Go DOT.

For those of you that are anti-union, please realize that not all unions are "bad". Unions, as someone alluded to previously, are only as good as their members. I am a proud Union Laborer and I think that we are one of the better unions. I support all of my fellow union brothers/sisters whenever and where ever I can, but I cannot stand the UAW. I believe the UAW and many municipal unions give unions in general the bad taste many of you have for them. I believe one would be ill advised to group all unions together as not all are the same.

Who is going to pay
|
Either way, the taxpayers of CT are going to have to pay for the police and DOT work. If someone gets killed protesting and the DOT didn't cooperate and help shut down a lane to give space to people walking/picketing, THINK of how much the lawsuits are going to cost us.
I'm not in favor of shutting down part of the highway for this, but the potential liability is enormous.
I'd like to know too, who at the higher levels of the DOT making this decision has a players card at the casinos?
