This company is out of business now but i'm looking for anyone that knows about Sumter Cabinet dressers. The company was in business since the 1880's but was bought out in the 1990s and then went bankrupt. I bought a nice dresser from an antique store and would like info on it. I'd appreciate any help. I tried calling a couple of antique stores in Sumter but no help.

I have heard of Sumter. Take a look around this site and you may discover some really great pieces that you might like.

Sumter Cabinet company was originally Korn Industries founded by Chester Korn... Korn Industries had 3 operations- Timber, sawmill, and furniture.

The company was founded in 1889. It was family owned until approx 2000. Then it was put up for sale, two companies made offers- Vaughn Bassett, and Chromecraft Revington. Chromecraft had the best offer. They purchased it in 2000.

The problem that Sumter Cabinet had was they were the best bedroom Furniture manufacturer in the 1980s. In my opinion, the demand was so great that the company started sending low quality merchandise just to fill trucks.
Cromecraft closed the company in 2005ish... They went to China and used the Sumter name... All this furniture is now made in China.

thank you. I know the piece that I have is well made and by the style i'm guessing it was made in the 1960s or 1970s. I remember a dresser that looked like a similiar style at someones house that i knew. Thanks for the info.

I own a Sumter bedroom set named River Dance. It was made around 1997. Was the Sumter quality still in at that time? It seems of very high quality. What I'd like to know is when did the Sumter quality start going downhill. Also, is it worth holding onto this set, because nobody makes solid wood sets anymore? I love it but at the same time, I'm a little tired of it.

Val you probably ay have the Cherryvale collection.. Loon on the rear of a nightstand or dresser for a sticker...

If it is a ricebed it is no doubt Cherryvale/8600 series.

That was one of the best sellers..

1997 Riverdance was made in house- Sumter SC.. It probably had some import parts.

I believe that was a very heavy oak set.

Anyone looking for furniture still made in the USA- we still have one company in the area.
Back in the 70s and 80s we had 3 furniture manufacturers... That being Williams Furniture/VaughnBasset VBWILLIAMS... Sumter Cabinet... And Carolina Furniture Works...

Carolina Furniture is still in business... Though they are struggling... Any help that you could send that companies way would probably be appreciated.

So sad that jobs go to China so regularly.

I have the full Cherryvale bedroom set as well as dining room set. We bought them in 1990 and they still look fabulous. Also have a maple 5 drawer chest from the early 80's. I will keep them - no doubt they will be heirloom quality.

My question comes in determining full replacement value (FRV) for damages during a recent move. Since they are no longer in business, I can't get a price from them and the price I paid 20 years ago is much less than it would cost today.

Would Carolina Furniture be the most comparable for prices?

I know what you mean--I'd kind of like to make a change, but I don't want to foolishly sell something that is still going up in value (if that is the case). Have you gotten any offers or figured out what value to put on which pieces?

Does anyone know the best place to find replacement drawer pulls for Sumter Victorian 9105 bedroom furniture purchased in 1992? I only need to replace some on the medium and large drawers which are of a brass finish and have a shell design in the middle of the handle. Thankfully, the small round wreath looking ones haven't broken yet! I am trying not to have to replace all 18. Thanks.

I purchased Sumter Cabinet Company's "Freedom Oak" Group 1400 bedroom suit, in 1977. I have the 2 night stands, No. 1405, Queen headboard No 1420, Triple dressor No.1468,(2) plate glass mirrors #1424, No 1408 Door Chest. 4-15-1977, I paid $1,070 for the 7 peices. I still have the receipt. I still have the color printed cards that shows each piece of the entire collection of "Freedom Oak." This are the absolute best pieces of furniture I have ever owned. I am still using it and told my children to never let this bedroon suite leave our family. Some of the drawer hardware is broken, and it all needs to be refinished, but looks good to be almost 34 years old. I hope this information may help someone.

Are you still looking for a bedroom set? I have the Sumter Cherryvale furniture. It is in perfect condition! Because of a torn disc in my back, we have to get an adjustable bed. That makes our bed a king bed. I love the furniture SO much and tried to find a headboard, but was not successful. I could only find low quality furniture out there. Well, we ended up purchasing a new set that will be delivered in a few days and we are selling the Sumter set. I am heartbroken. We have a queen headboard, footboard, railings, tall dresser, and long dresser. If you are interested in buying them, please let me know!
