My husband and I went to h&r block for the first time in 6 years. They past 6 I have been doing our taxes myself on turbo tax. We decided to go this year because we had 1099, and other w2's we do not usually receive, plus We were both students..Anyway, we gave them all of our information, and since we do not have children, we were told we would get a refund of 477.00 ... Which we thought was great that we did not have to pay in... WRONG.... I did a friend of mine's taxes who was also a student and she received over 1000.00 for a school credit... So I went over ours. H&R Block made a HUGE error that I, not a tax professional, found. They screwed us out of 1,300.00 !!!! Then treated me like I was an idiot when we called to complain. They said they would reimburse me the fee if they saw there was an error, and not an error on turbo tax. WHY WOULD I TRUST THEM WHEN THEY SCREWED UP?? IT WAS A MAN THAT HAD OVER 30 YEARS EXPERIENCE, and the girl was about my age that wanted to "check" them again for us.. I paid them to do our taxes, and I ended up having to amend them, so now we have to wait God only knows how long to get them back... And still had to pay H&R Block, and have.never felt more embarrassed, or insulted by someone I paid for a service... Never again.. I feel like I have been completely scammed!
DAMN YOU H&R BLOCK

The IRS announced today that over a half million taxpayers who claim education credit will have their refund delayed due to a software glich at tax preparing companies, including H&R Block. Blame congress for this screw up. I fail to see why you couldnt use turbo taxes, I believe all software regardless of the make have worksheets that help you figure out where to put the info. If you still have your turbo tax program why not try it out and see if it was able to handle the extra 1099 w2 etc. I run my tax twice once as married filling joint, and once as maried fi1ling seperate and see which gives us what. Once again if you have a tax question, pick up the phone and ask the irs and no one else get the agents name and number.Their answer is the only one that counts.

Well said. However, for many that come here, "being calm, cool, and collected" is too much like work, thus it's avoided.
The problem is that when people run out of old Springer and Povich shows on their DVR's to catch up on, they run online and spew hate in any forum they can find it. And since everyone always has a story about how someone else screwed up their taxes, here we are.
Nice way to keep it professional. Timothy, you may be a very good agent, but as far as H&R Block's tax preparers are concerned, even you have to admit its a hit or miss. I would like to inform you that I had my taxes prepared by an H&R Block "seasoned veteran" the 4th of Feb. It is March 15 and although I have received my state refund, my federal refund, the larger chunk of change, apparently had some issues with it because I have yet to hear of the status of said return. Also, insinuating that every person that is disgruntled with H&R Block must in some way a piece of lazy and unintelligent is simply degrading. My frustrations with H&R Block are that I have to pay someone over $180 for a half hour of work so they can, in some way, shape, or form, screw up my tax return. And apparently I'm not alone being that H&R Block has come out and stated that they have failed to file complete returns for over 600,000 other individuals. Timothy, point is, there are always two sides to every story and that insinuating insults are not necessarily the best way to go about promoting a business. I'm sure your employer would not like this post representing their company. Next time, think it through before hitting the send key...

Went to H and R block in Selma Alabama last year, and they charged me 138 dollars. Had a second look done and they missed about 1000 dollars in returns. PLUS I found out they over charged me big time.
This is pretty distressing considering that their whole business platform is based on doing peoples TAXES!!
I think they are a mickey mouse operation. They called me for an appointment and when I showed up they said nothing was scheduled. IDIOTS.

Went to the block last year and was very satisfied, this year...nothing was explained to me, was told i couldn't do this or that several times, they wouldn't allow me to itemize jack squat, needless to say I didn't even get a 1/4 of what I got back last year and this year i made more and payed more, my out of state tax return actually states what I'm getting back and I had to explain that to the guy and he pulls out a calculator and split it in half!!!! it took every ounce of control to not put my boot in his face....

I have been going to H and R Block for several years. However, 2013 will be the last time that I ever step foot in this establishment. My husband and I sat down for 45 minutes and we were told we would receive $300 back and her fee was $398!!!! We own a house and a rental property so I did not think this number could be accurate. After insisting that this was wrong, we left. I then went to a CPA who only charged us $143 and explained everything to us and now we are getting over $8,000 back. DO NOT GO TO H&R!!!!!

Terrible experience with H & R Block. I probably have the most simple tax returns in the states and they screwed them up. Go figure.

H&R Block is an awful company with horrible customer service. They have lied to me countless times this year after the 8863 debacle. I have confronted those lies with the truth that their own CEO has posted on facebook and I'm told I was never lied to. So apparently, I'm the one lying if I'm telling the truth and you still won't admit it. Not only that, but they messed up my state return. I was told on 2/11 that I needed my husband's military orders. I asked if I sent them in separate. No, I was told by Sandra at Spring Lake, NC H&R Block to bring them back in to be faxed to PA. I bring them in 2/12 to be faxed but get a letter in March from my state saying they need military orders. I call and ask if they were faxed. I was told they were. I checked back with PA since H&R did refax them to be sure. They don't know. So I contact H&R and ask for proof that they faxed the orders. They have one sheet in the file that says refaxed on it for 3/10. But there is no other sheet to indicate it was faxed anytime before then. I was told by the branch manager, George Williams, that I was never lied to. Well, they said it was faxed and it wasn't faxed. They said that the IRS was dragging their feet with my federal return and it was a software issue. How is that not being lied to? I asked him that very question and his response is "It is not our responsibility to fax military orders, we do it as a courtesy." Not to mention I told him Sandra had told me to bring them in. So if you tell me to bring them in, I'm trusting you to do what you said you would do. They refused to give me the district managers number as well as refused to withdraw the preparation fees.

H&R Block is a place I will never go to again. Not to mention it is March 26, 2013 and I received a letter in the mail today about the 8863 issue rather than when it actually happened. Thanks alot H&R. Showing such classy customer service to a loyal customer of 4 years. Well, never again.

I dont undertand why if you have access to a computer, to post your rant did you not go to walmart or wherever buy the program for about 50 bucks and do it yourself, also if you went into a store front, why you did not ask the price up front before you gave your info.
Actually even asking up front doesn't do anything all the time. Some of my friends told me when they asked, they were told they wouldn't know until they did the taxes. I paid $444 and my husband was deployed, we claimed our first child, and because I had one LES from National Guard in PA, I wanted to make sure someone else did the taxes since I wasn't sure how PA would handle me being in another state. I estimate 10% of your return is what you will pay H&R, and that always seemed close to about right. But it is too extreme of an amount. I still went to H&R and had issues with the state return as well as the 8863 issue

Because you didn't trust H&R Block, you could be getting an IRS bill for the amount they paid you for a child that is too old to claim on EIC. You CAN NOT claim a child once they are 14. FACT and LAW!! And the fact that you think you are owed this money because of a dead beat dad is amazing. Where do you think this EIC money comes from? the money fairy?
I am adding a link here for you, accountant. That clearly states under EIC, the child must be under the age of 19.

^^^AGREE H&R Block has nothing to do with holding funds it's the IRS!
Actually if you have your processing fees taken out from your refund, then H&R is responsible. And I do believe that if someone is saying that they are not updating their program to show where they are at. I cannot say if H&R can link to that or not, because I'm an 8863 issue and mine only says accepted date which has changed frequently. Though I do agree that H&R's site is a mess.

My experience with H&R Block in a nutshell: technical problems, poor customer service, deceptive advertising, shady business practices all-round.

My federal and one state return went through fine but when I tried to e-file my New York State return it showed a technical error and wouldn't e-transmit. I tried to talk to technical support about this issue and was told someone would contact me within 48 hours. I didn't hear anything for almost a week, when they finally called they told me they were working on it and would be in touch soon. I called again a couple weeks later and was told the issue still hadn't been resolved, and that it was something wrong with their system, not with my return but they had no idea what the issue was. A couple weeks after that it seems to have finally gone through, but my fingers are crossed.

To add insult to injury they tried to charge me for my NY state return when the whole reason I signed up with HR Block was because they advertised NY state was free. I had to call, wait on hold for 25 minutes, and finally get a refund, another pointless hassle.

Last, but not least, and the reason I'm posting in this forum (and Yelp and everywhere else I can find) is that when my NY State return finally went through I was directed to a page to write a review of their product. I wrote a shorter version of what is posted above and submitted it. Two days later I got an email telling me my review was rejected because it doesn't comply with their "guidelines." I checked their guidelines, which basically just say no profanity, personal attacks, etc... My review was well within the guidelines, I think they just don't publish negative reviews. Unbelievably shady...

I switched to HR Block this year from TurboTax but definitely will be switching back after these myriad problems and most of all the lack of competent customer service and sketchy selective review publishing.

I used to work with a guy who moonlighted at H+R Block. He couldn't even understand how to make an IRA contribution to offset taxes owed. I'm sure at one point in his life he had a good idea in his head, but he farted it out.

True funds are on hold if u do have fees but again that's for H+R Block to deduct from The IRS and as part of the government legally that has to be done within 48hrs so again it's the IRS holding ur funds. For all u know the fees were deducted and IRS choosen not to release. Going forward on 8863 if u were affected by it and were educated enough to call IRS or H+R Block you would have known of the issue, which was that paperwork was not transmitted with full information both IRS and H+R Block now I am one to say that it did suck to have this situation but common that's what's gonna define the the company that has done many people's taxes is well known is going to be considered trash just for that ?! Please mistakes are done eveywhere. It happen to be this company same could have happen else where. Now why arnt u and other customers mad or hating on the government the ones who took 1month and a half to get there signatures done the same tax year the ones who didn't accept your 8863 form because they Wernt ready. Like I said just how the government had there problem H+R Block did as well. Just keep in mind one thing at the end u get ur money even though YES some people r in desperate need of it for whatever Finacial situation we all need to be patient. Why?! Simply because it's a refund for all we know government can change the law and keep it and not return it! So instead of blaming so much a company be mad at the situation but don't live with it and scaring something that could have happen to anyone.- Thank you

Educated enough.. are you not educated enough to read my post, where I did indeed call H&R Block and was blatantly LIED to and did not learn about the Software issue until I did call the IRS. You are literally unbelievable. And the IRS releases the deposit to H&R Bank, who then has it in their bank and was told it could take 2-3 days from when it gets to their bank. Yes, what they told me and what it says in the H&R Block contract. Also what happened with the state return is also H&R Block's fault. I can let the 8863 issue slide. Mistakes happen, but when you lie to me about what happened, then call me a liar, and then not take credit for not take credit for faxing orders, then yes, that is H&R Block. Re-educate yourself and read fully yourself.

Went to H&R after seeing adds, should have read reviews first. After signing agreement realized tax preparer was confused over simple IRA rollover , he then said my taxes were to complicated for him and he would have to refer me to a specialist. I thought he was a specialist. Now am I going to have to pay him for his time that he did nothing??????? I am so discouraged and tired of being ripped off.

In getting our return done for 2012, we were informed that the preparer who did them last year made a HUGE mistake! So we now owe a ton of money to the IRS from last year. Money that we do not have. And we just got a letter from our state department saying there were errors on our return for 2012 and we now owe instead of a refund! They say they stand behind their work but that's only if you pay more money for the peace of mind guarantee and they only pay up to $5500.00 which we did not purchase last year! This place is a joke and false advertise in their commercials. I do not and will never recommend them! Will never go back and now we have to figure out how to pay thousands of dollars we don't have. H&R should be responsible for their mistakes not because they are or are not required to legally but because they want to run a good honest business. A company that takes care of their customers is always a good company and will always continue to get business. H&R does not take care of their customers and that is just sad. They do not stand behind their work and they do nothing to help. Without paying for the peace of mind they only pay the initial penalties and fees for mistakes in previous years of returns. Doesn't help much when it's going to take years to pay back the IRS and you will incur interest over that period of time. The customer is the one who pays for THEIR MISTAKE. We gave all correct information and if we understood how to do our own taxes, we wouldn't have paid someone else hundreds of dollars to do them for us. A person should be able to trust their tax preparer to do what they do not understand to do themselves. And if the tax preparer makes a mistake they should pay for it. Worthless and dishonest. That's H&R Block!

So this was my first year doing my own taxes as I am a 20 year old college student who just got out on my own. I decided to go to H&R Block and man, was that a mistake. The guy didnt even ask for my form from school and he filed my taxes-that I paid $40.00 for the services and $26 for the emerald card- then a friend of mine said they didn't see how I had finished my taxes when the school form wasn't out yet. When I got the form, I took it to H&R Block and the guy made me pay $83, up front, for an amended tax return if I wanted to get the other $1200 that was actually owed to me which hadn't been on the original return because I had no idea about the school form. I'm very mad because this guy has been doing tax returns for 20+ years and this was my very first one. I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO H&R BLOCK. Their people don't know what they're doing. I would definitely NOT recommend them. I would rather have a hobo from the streets do my tax return next year than to back to H&R Block!!!
