Did you actually read the articles you posted? The first is an op-ed. I agree with much of what Ron Paul says, but don't agree with him about why the Depression hung on for so long. A crisis of that order will not repair itself overnight. And from your WSJ article:
"Part of the answer is a political class greedy to push home-ownership rates to historic highs -- from 64% in 1994 to 69% in 2004. This was mostly the result of loans to low-income, higher-risk borrowers. Both Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, abetted by Congress, trumpeted that rise as it occurred."
Which directly ties to Bush speech I linked. And that Congress was controlled by ..... So, my question is, why are you always trying to pin this solely on the Dems? Seems the Repubs enjoyed sitting on their high horse trumpeting rising home ownership numbers.
I am not it was both parties starting long before GW was in any office.

You are misinformed. Our current president is against tbe bailout for the auto manufacturers. That would be Pelosi, Reid, and BO. They are also talking about another stimulus package. They will hand out our money like candy. Let me know when you get your tax cut and your healthcare. You were hood-winked by this guy who has no experience and no record. Empty suit...

I know it. But go check the bills and acts the put us here. The CRA of 77 was ok until the hill started to play around with it in the 90s. I can post (again) the list of bills and acts. For the leverage, lack of transparency, deregulation - and old fashion greed to be had to get help. And it got it from the hill.
Yo, I use to work with CRAs everyday - you don't know what you are talking about.
CRA's only work with FDIC insured Banks, not mortgage originators.
Until just before the meltdown even Fannie had only 28% of the subprime market, all of the rest was held by private institutions non GSEs.
If you really want to understand the problem - learn about: SIVs, leverage, and CDOs.
Right-wing nuts feed to CRA as code word for minority - you know blame the minorities.
I suspect "minorities" don't won enough toxic loans to sink one bank much less the world - GROW UP.

Maybe you should repeat the 6th grade (that assumes you are old enough) and learn how our government works. The president cannot give anyone a blank check without the votes of Congress which is run by a majority of the democrats. The democrats are supporting all these additional bailouts including another stimulus package. And, I never said I was for the first bailout - I didn't agree with President Bush when he supported bailing out the fincancial institutions. Like I said in the last post, let me know when you get your tax cut....don't hold your breath...

" these bailouts are happening by way of Paulson and his Wall St. buddies with little protest from the citizenry is a sad indictment of American society. The boundary between corporations and government has been obliterated. Banks now clearly own the government and vice versa. The Dubya Bush Company looks frighteningly like nazi fascism, but maybe it is something else. Corporate welfare state? Oligarchy? Does anybody have a name for this?

The conduct of the U.S. government and the banks should be raising serious questions like: What is money? Where does it come from? What gives it its value? The U.S. dollar is rapidly loosing its meaning as hundreds of billions, even trillions are conjured out of thin air to give away to mismanaged pyramid schemes (a.k.a. banks).

It should be more and more clear that money is a tool to enslave the powerless. Those who have it in excess have not earned it; it is simply declared and then given to the powerful by the powerful, and we stupidly go along with both parties lies..neither party pushes for a balanced budget ammendment to the Constitution..the left taxes and spends, while the right borrows and spends whats the difference?? My parents grew up in a lower middle class midwestern town when the President had to get a job when he retired-america has turned into media wars and bailouts? sickening"

I agree with you in part (the latter part to an extent). But this stimulus package likely would not be geared toward the wealthy, but toward the middle classes and lower-paid workers.

I'm no economist, but I have to wonder, with all these bailouts, stimulus packages and rate cuts, what is going to happen to the value of the dollar? Aren't we just creating the perfect storm for inflation by increasing access to easy money? Hopefully, most people will see a bit more money in their wallets with gasoline prices beginning to taper toward what I'd consider more reasonable prices, but with that, we need stable employment. Therein lies the paradox to the situation. I do see where the bailout was somewhat intended to keep people in work, but again, at what long-term cost?
