Anyone who beleives this story is an idiot!!! Im sorry, you must be by some of the comments Ive read. Ive been on 11, yes 11 RCCL cruises and several other cruise line cruises and that would simply never happen!! Im not saying they are perfect, but what Im reading is ridiculous. If you beleive or make a decision based on this absurd story, you are an idiot!!
I have to agree. I've cruised several times and this story just sounds fishy. Although I know a family who was quarantined on the ship because they were sick. If they chose to exit the ship, they could not get back on. But that's just general policy and this was not RCL. They remained on the ship and the next time they cruise, they were more careful and responsible.

I will never travel with this cruise line. The first thing I would have done when getting back to the USA is get a good attorney. When I get through with them, I will own the whole fleet of cruise ships.
THat can happen on any cruiseline. Once again, that's the policy. Try a little personal responsibility. YOu all want a great, cheap vacation, but don't want to take out the insurance then blame the cruiseline when it doesn't go your way. Typical ignorant American.

I've traveled with several cruise lines in the past few years, and I'm shocked that this happened with this line. I will only travel with this line now because I've had some horror stories on other cruise lines. I don't believe that they should have been left the family stranded; however the family should have purchased travel insurance that away this situation wouldn't have came to this! I'm thinking that there is more to this story because
I've traveled with someone that was ill on a cruise and he received medical attention on board and there were no further issues.
Apparantly there is a little more to the story.

They have to be out of their (as old people say) COTTON PICKING MINDS! This is just plain stupid on that cruise line ship part. What happen to the peoples rights!!!!!!!! They indeed should be refunded for all their money and more, why would you throw a family off the boat in the middle of night to defend for themselves in a place they knew no-one. I bet if that was a WHITE FAMILY (yes I said it!) this kind of thing would have not happened. To the Cortez family, I want to apologize, what you went through and hope this will not dicourge you in any way, you have to be reminded that their a still some mean and prestgious people in the world we live in today.
Ignorant Racist. Maybe you should at least try to understand what your talking about. That's the policy and at least someone thought of the kid. It's obvious the parents didn't care.

this family deserves a refund they were mistreated, neglected, stranded, abused and embarrassed so pay this family their money back and some more money sue these folks for your money and for there money too. come on this is sad.
Typical American. Money, money, money but never any concern for taking personal responsibility. Guess what, this doesn't work with foreigners. They have policies which you have to follow and whining and begging doesn't get you your way, not does it work to just "SUE" afterward. I hope they don't get a dime. They were wrong. If you can't deal with it stay int he states. Americans feel they can do whatever they want and if it doesn't go their way, they expect money.

I don't believe the Cortez family story. As far as being left on an island they know nothing about, come on, they speak english in the Bahamas!
I wouldn't take a 6 month old baby on a cruise to start with but I would want to get him off the ship as soon as possible if he got sick. There are very limited resources on a cruise ship out in the ocean.
I've seen grown people on cruises get soooo sick from sea sickness. Why would you subject a little baby to that to start with? Not to mention the million other things that can go wrong when traveling with a baby.

Isnt that why they went to the embassy? please travel more and get more familiar with the world. Only in America will we absolve the family of personal accountability ad blame evrything on the service provider, without accounting for their attempts at resolution. As a cruise line, dont you think it would have been far more profitable if the family stayed onboard??? Between bingo, bars, and other activities, they would have probably spent the same amount of money as they did getting back home, but ALL could have been avoided if the parents made better travel planning decisions from the get go.

I do understand that cruise lines have taken a lot of criticism in the last few years. It seems like every time they sailed, everyone came down with some type of flu. So I can see how they may have come down pretty hard on travelers this year. It also seems that someone representing the cruise line dropped the ball in regards to public relations. I feel they could have made arrangements to see that the family had a way home.(Like a hotel to stay for a couple of days until the family could make their own arrangements, or telephone other family members to wire money). It would have, at least, made the cruise line seem like they cared about their patrons.(Or future customers). They will probably lose money temporarily because of this situation.

But, I can't believe that child was the only sick person on the cruise. When a child gets sick, they get sick right where they are,(throwing up, etc). I don't know how many people are on a cruise ship at one time, but you can bet there were some travelers that were just getting over the flu, or had been exposed to the flu before the trip, or were actively sick, but was discreet in hiding it from others.(If anyone gets sick after this cruise, it'll be this family that gets the blame, when it could have been the adult sitting next to the person at the dinner table.

With all the facts read (both news, and RC press release) I feel both parties have things to own up to..people are correct that the parents should have better planned for "in-case emergancies" as a mother of a 16-month I know nothings ever certain but the cruise line could have handled things abit more thoroughly. It sounds like the RC gave them only options instead of handling things themselves like contacting the embassy, and a hotel personally..trust me the last thing the family needed was to worry about all those extra details while involved in an emergancy evac to the hospital. Now no i'm not saying the blame is central to either one party, by all means it falls on both. again it was mishandled by both parties!

Thanks for the other side of the story, Jack. This sounds more reasonable. Anytime people go to the press before trying to alleviate their problems I get very suspicious. I think this family couldn't or wouldn't understand what they had to do in order to received proper treatment.

In all we have read in the parent's accounting it says nothing about two other children or the ship's offer to make arrangements for one parent to take the baby to the hospital while the other stayed on board to watch them.

This is a case of using children to gain the Publics' sympathy and maybe a few extra dollars to boot. I don't believe these parents listened to the advice of the cruise ship as to how to go about handling the situation and were instead intent upon crying "foul."

And I will say what others have said. Why would any decent parent take a 7 month old baby on a cruise? An infant that small can pick up all kinds of illnesses traveling in such cramped quarters.

This story is just not right! Some of the important detail is missing....

All cruise lines require as a condition of booking travel and medical repatriation insurance.

ALL CHILDREN NOW REQUIRE their own passport.

In my personal view (and I am not a medic) the best place for the family would be on land with access to full medical facilities and a range of expert medical care professional on tap. Not a sick bay on a ceruise ship..

Anyone with a communicable illness or sickness or family close to the sick peron could well be a carrier or conduit so the last place they should be is in a closed commumnity such as in the middle of the ocean on board a ship.

Sadly many people will cover up serious medical conditions which develop say a few days before they are due to start their cruise as they don't want to lose the money and on board they won't report it as they will be confined to their cabin for three days at least.

So they selfishly just infect the majority and everyone suffers.

As for being dumped, answer the above and see if
the story still stands up..

Finally don't take children under the age of 23 on board any ship I'm on.( OK, a joke . I mean 53)

Regards

Julian Bray

Must have been a tough call for the doctor. When your responsible for thousands of other lives you cant take a chance, I shut down a Hotel for a week because of Norwalk once... He did the right thing. I hope that they set them up with a flight home? There is good business and bad business.
