husband to get laid off
for me writing this. This company continues to make more money every year and yet they pay their employees nada. Ceo's and the like are finding serious increases and the little guy just keeps getting cut. If they keep raising minimum wage, They may have to get a raise to meet it.

Coal - fired power plants.....

I'd say the outlook for the planet also is nice and warm.

And they'll make money from scrubbers and retrofits! It's almost like paying a burglar to guard your house!

'We are huge carbon spewers, but look! We can attach a bunch of expensive shite to your chimneys that'll help! You'll be in compliance with any and all regulations for a nominal charge!'

These guys are clever, and meeting our energy needs all at the same time!

Lady. Don't make assumptions about something that you know nothing about. B&W pays their employees very well. They pay above market rates for the professional positions such as engineers, accountants, human resource professional, etc. B&W picks the best employees and pays them well so that they stay employed. There is very little turnover there. If your husband tells you he isn't makin the bacon there, then he is hiding the truth from you. He may not want to let you know how much he really makes in fear that you may spend it. Even if he is a hourly employee somewhere within the company, I bet he is still making a nice wage.

This company is an asset for NE Ohio. Please do not trash them.

New guy...based on your ability to spell, I assume that you were not working as an engineer or accountant or in some other professional position. Thanks for your service. Since you were in a UNION, you should blame the UNION and not B&W. Right?

How much do you think they would make if the union didn't fight for them. Do you think the company would offer more? B&W is a great company in many facets, unfortunatley companies nowadays do not pay their employees what they are worth. If a company is making as much money as McDermott is, Don't you think they would reward their employees. The american way? I guess the american way any more is doing away with middle class. It is sad that I can't purchase healthy food and I need to scrimp and save to afford a dental appointment. Don't get me wrong, my finances are not in dissarray because my husband makes peanuts, It is not because we live outside our means. It is because the cost of living is skyrocketing. The valuable employees just want to make enough to compensate for the cost of living increases and for their part in making McDermott successful. I hope that the union and B&W can come to a compromise soon and that B&W will come out on top as a caring company who values their hard laborers. But seeing this article talking about how well they are doing only irritates me when the contract is at such a ridiculous offer.

New guy, I agree with you. We were opposed to making you pay for health benefits. Unfortunately so many uneducated people can't see beyond the here and now, they can't see that one day, the same can happen to them. And to be quite honest, it shows the gap in peoples morals. I apologize for the vote that made you pay and I am sorry you are so angry, but I can understand why. Sad that companies, unions aren't the way they used to be many years ago. Such a throw away society we live in.

The bottom line is....... Its a slap in the face when you see an article saying how much money they make then hear about what they want to offer on the new contract.... Its the employees that make a company.. So why is it that these companys are always trying to screw the employees. Their wage and the cost of living doesn't equal out.. families are struggling to survive.... Companys years ago cared about their employees now all the care about is profit and how much the can keep in their own pockets...

Are you talking about McDermott or B&W? Just because McDermott makes alot of money doesn't mean that B&W makes alot of money. McDermott is the parent company of B&W and several other companies. All of these smaller subsidiary companies contribute their revenues (sales) and profits or losses to the parent. McDermott's profits mayt be the result of other subsidiaries. Maybe B&W is losing money and a result can not afford to have the luxury of giving fantastic raises, etc. You need to understand that McDermott and B&W are separate entities and just because McDermott makes money, it doesn't mean that B&W is healthy.

Please do your research. Billions earned in net income? Thats was earned means. Research the company's annual reports and other SEC documents and you will see that the company has not realized billions and billions of net income. In 2000 and 2001 for starters, the company lost $20 million and $22 million respectively.

Did you read the article we are conversing over? Have you read any financials on B&W? Then you see that they could offer a better contract. I understand that McDermott and B&W are two seperate entities but both are doing well. Both have a bright future. If one of them wasn't doing as well, I could see a strain on both of them, but this is not the case. Cost of living is killing us all and with the company doing so well, they should spread the wealth to the deserving skilled workers. Heck, even the welfare checks are getting bigger haha.

I did read it. Did you? You will note that Power Generation Division is only one component of B&W Company. There is also a nuclear division, etc. Just because the Power Generation division had a nice QUARTER with $72 million of income, doesn't mean that the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th quarters will be the same. It also doesn't mean that B&W as a company made money that quarter. What if the nuclear division lost $80 million last quarter? Then possibly B&W as a whole lost money then? Different picture that the paper reports and you in turn believe. I am not going to pretend that I know anything about unions. I know that the unions are there to protect the workers from the "big bad company". Unions had a purpose many years ago. I don't think they do now. If your husband isn't making money, then blame the union, not the company. I went to college, received a BA, Masters and am a certified professional in my field. It is up to me to make as much money as I can. It is up to me to work hard and be a productive member of the team. It is up to me to be a leader and make an impression on others. It is up to me to make my own opportunities. If the company doesn't give me the raise and promotion that I think I deserve, then I will leave and seek those opportunities elsewhere. I don't blame the company, I blame myself for not making things happen.
