-- A lawsuit filed in Houston alleges that five U.S. firms conspired to steal liquefied natural gas worth up to $300 million from Pemex of Mexico The lawsuit names BASF Corp., Murphy Energy Corp., Trammo Petroleum, Bio Nu Southwest Inc. and U.S. Petroleum Depot, all Texas companies, and six middlemen, accusing them of stealing the gas in a scheme that began in 2006, the San Antonio, Texas, Express News reported Tuesday .Pemex is a Mexican state-owned petroleum company. The suit was filed two week after the former chief executive officer of Continental Fuels, Tim Brink, pleaded guilty in a connected case.
The former vice president of Continental Fuels, Joshua Crescenzi, who cooperated with authorities, caught Brink on tape discussing the stolen gas, the newspaper reported. BASF and Murphy Energy have both said they did not know the petroleum condensate, or LNG, was stolen.” We feel as victimized as Pemex," said Joel Androphy, an attorney representing Murphy Energy. I am just trying to help my mom. Her grandparents signed one of those "15/16" leases to HJ McMullen in 1929. Is there any update on how or if this can be broken? I really want to help her and any information you can provide is much appreciated. I have a copy of the lease/contract. Please contact me at [email protected]

Thank You!

Jun. 9--Mexico's state-run oil monopoly has sued five companies -- including the world's largest chemical firm -- in hopes of recovering more than $300 million in stolen petroleum condensate illegally resold in South Texas.

The oil businesses named in the suit all profited from a scheme that started with siphoning off thousands of gallons of product, moving it through Rio Grande Valley ports of entry and gathering it at the Port of Brownsville before shipping it to buyers across the state.

The lawsuit, filed Monday in a federal court in Houston, identifies German chemical giant BASF and Tulsa, Okla.-based Murphy Energy as end receivers of the stolen product. Six middlemen who allegedly purchased the purloined petrol with full knowledge that the product was stolen are also named as defendants.

"These illegal enterprises remain viable because end users and distributors like BASF and Murphy purchase the stolen product," said James Teater, an attorney representing Petroleos Mexicanos, better known as Pemex. "The only way to stop the theft is to shut down the market. That won't happen as long as end users are buying."

Both BASF and Murphy have denied knowingly buying stolen condensate.

"BASF cooperated fully with the federal government's investigation in this matter and has never been accused of wrongdoing," said David Stryker, general counsel for the company. "It will defend the case vigorously and expects Pemex's baseless allegations to be dismissed in their entirety."

PLAGUED BY THEFT

Among the defendants are five South Texas oil executives who pleaded guilty to conspiring to sell stolen goods. But the path that led the product into their hands is as convoluted as it was illegal.

Chemical companies value condensate, a petroleum-based liquid byproduct of natural gas production, for its lack of contaminants, which makes it easily refinable into higher-value oil products. Pemex's Burgos Field, which stretches across the Mexican states of Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon and Coahuila and includes more than 2,800 wells, is one of the country's most prolific sources.

But for years, criminals groups in Mexico have siphoned thousands of gallons from government-run pipelines using sophisticated techniques like tunneling under existing pipes and building their own shadow lines. Some have gone so far as to hijack Pemex tankers to steal the product en route to its lawful destinations.

At times, the quantity stolen has approached 40 percent of Pemex's entire condensate production from the Burgos field, Teater said. With Pemex's revenue accounting for nearly one-third of the Mexican government's annual revenues, authorities took drastic steps to stanch the illegal flow.

In 2009, Tamaulipas state police arrested nine men in Reynosa on suspicion of transporting stolen condensate with help from the Zetas, a drug cartel that has recently expanded into other criminal rackets.

Their investigation later resulted in the arrests of at least 39 others, including two customs agents who allegedly allowed product they knew to be stolen
