We had them ranging in size from 3 feet to one that was around 6 feet in length at Cypress Bend in Pompano. They would often be found sunning on the pool decks near the sleeping elderly. They aren't a harm to people.

I had a medium sized one run across the road in front of me in Tavernier , unfortunately I ran it over and it was mortally wounded , thankfully the dumptruck behind me finished it off .
I work on boats and constantly find iguanas on them . Sometimes they are pretty damn big . One time , I was walking to a boat behind a house off of Las Olas along a ficus hedge.. there was a hibiscus tree kind of poking out near the end of the hedge close to the dock . It was around 8 am and I wasn't quite expecting the hedge and hibiscus to erupt in violent shaking , with a 4+ foot iguana flying out of it , hitting the dock with a thud , and then launching into the canal.
Nearly scared the used nutrients out of me .

They can defend themselves quite well if you try grabbing one

could be but the iguanas are generally docile, and peaceful. They are vegetarians and not man eaters.

I understand that there's going to be an Invasive Species Festival in the Everglades next winter, probably down at Chockaloskee. I think this is a great idea. Finally, we recognize and celebrate our heritage of biological diversity! Everyone is invited to bring their beloved non-indigenous pets for some fun in the sun. There are going to be nature walks to spot non-native animals, nile monitor lizard races, a photography contest, python-alligator wrestling, a caiman hunt, a best-in-show contest in about eleven different categories (ie, birds, fish, snakes, lizards, turtles, frogs, arachnids, snails, trees, and shrubs, fish and hispanics), and special prizes will be given to anyone who can produce an as yet unrecorded type of established nonnative anole and/or a purebred specimen of a native yellow-bellied turtle without any red eared slider DNA in it. There'll be a booth where reptile dealers can have themselves microchipped for free. I hear they're trying to get Valerie C. Wisecracker, "Mother Florida" herself, to write the theme music and entertain. This sounds like a blast. I'll try to keep everyone informed as plans firm up.
