How about we build the refinery in canada, create 20000 jobs here and then sell the processed goods for 3-5 as much as you would be paying for our unprocessed natural resources that we would pretty much be givingggggg to you.
You claim to want to reduce your dependance on oil in the middle east. At BEST the saudis and other so called "friendly" middle eastern countries either claim innocence or simply turn a blind eye to terrorist regimes there. Meanwhile you are literally bankrupting yourselves with the military expenses incurred...all the while feeeding the very dogs that want to kill you by buying their oil.
You claim to be Canada's friend, we in turn are trying to help you ...20000 high paying jobs when your nation is suffering 9.1% unemployment and you repay us by spitting at us and calling it dirty oil.
Not one drop of blood is spilled over our resources in canada and unlike the saudis women in canada don't need permission to drive or work or even show their face in public.

It's not about the troops anywhere in the world, you ..., don't throw out those emotional reasons! It's not about Canada--it's about a BAD process to mix oil, and then transport it BADLY across a nation, and putting our WATER at risk, which would mean that livestock and PEOPLE have nothing to drink, What kind of crying will you do then, when you CAN'T buy or import CLEAN water? When the price for pint of water is 100 dollars? Will that matter?

The offer of jobs is very transitory part of the argument. We can grow our own jobs by creating better kinds of energy.

By that arguement you had better shut down all your pipelines because indeed all hydrocarbons are bad for you.
You can minimize the risks in a number of ways. Build it using the best of materials and qcc it to extremely stringent codes. Design it with internal coatings to eliminate corrosion.
Once it is built maintain it! Schedule regular inspections for stress corrosion cracking, use smart pigging technology, ultrasonic testing etc.
Wait why am I arguing the point!
I and mannny others also believe that shipping our bitumen to you is bad for Canada and bad for alberta. Indeed we would be better served by building the pipeline to a refinery that we would build ourselves locally.
