It's trip-ally difficult for technical businesses to survive in Australia. In the past after the second world war the Australian Government went out of it's way to grow manufacturing and science by a raft of policies and ongoing government support in many forms including tariffs, government policies for skills training, Government run industries growing technology and a skilled labour force and manufacturing capability, also the CSRIO developed science for Australian industries.
It was all trashed when when Bob Hawke came to power with Paul Keating as Treasure, they deliberately demolished Australian industries and the support system to foster their growth. This was judstified by Hawke and Keating on the basis that all industries had to be self supporting, while ignoring the vast support the USA provides their industries with Government funded research and aggressive leverage to open markets using the clout of the US Government. This lie of the “free market” promugated by the strong Nations to justify eliminating the industry support in small Nations, was an simply outrageous lie to corner markets for the greed of the “Big Guys”.
In the 1980s it worried the Banking Elite of the City of London and Wall Street that Australia was wealthy enough to develop an economy for Australians instead of allow itself to be sucked dry for the benefit of the Investor class in Europe and America. This was the real reason that the Wall Street Banks withheld rolling over loans to South Africa back in the 1980s forcing SA to dismantle their society and the blood letting ever since, not because of any idealogical convictions against apartheid. In Australia's case financial warfare was not eventually required as the Hawke Keating Government did that for them.
Lets hope there's a real trend to build the advanced technologies in Australia but it will take generations and genuine blood and guts to support such Industries, not something Governments of both Political flavours has ever shown it's prepared to do, except for short term tax breaks that achieve little lasting benefit.
Real success will come when the culture is repaired, after years of damage and raping the Australian Public's mind by the mass media we came to a state where Bob Hawke and Paul Keating could pull off their betrayal of the Australian publics future. In the late 1800s and first half of the twentieth century an amazing amount of infrastructure and development was built with small means but the culture supported it.
