Security Hole Turns Gmail Into a Spam Machine

The Information Security Research Team (INSERT) claims to have discovered a security flaw in Gmail that allows a spammer to send thousands of bulk e-mails through Google's SMTP service undetected, bypassing both Google's ID fraud protection mechanisms and its 500-address limit on e-mail.

It is true, as soon as I opened my gmail account, dozens of spam messages arrived daily. Even though they ended up in the spam folder, I must open the folder and speed read the sender names to make sure it isn't from one of my regular lists.

So many spammers are trying to find security holes, and being that G-mail is a big service, they've been targeted.

We waste so much time and money dealing with spam that it may be necessary to require actual POP access instead of "invoked by network" access just to cut down on spam.

This has nothing to do with you receiving spam in your Gmail account.
