The Hawaiian students that graduate from Kamehameha Schools go off to the mainland for college. Almost all of them remain on the mainland to work and never come back to Hawai'i. Who can blame them? Same with Punahou and Iolani grads. I think they call it "Braindrain". These students are being replaced by California baby boomer retirees...who at least are "educated". I'm not sure how educated are the immigrants coming in from China, Korea and Vietnam...and the Marshall Islands and Samoa.

Type this number:$1,000,000...type it 1000 times. That's how much money Kamehameha Schools brings in every year...to put in their bank...to go along with the other billions of dollars in their endowment.

For those bitter parents who didn't get any money from Kamehameha: Don't plan on it! Don't count on it! If you budget your lives around paying for everything, anything outside the norm you recieve will be "gravy". But don't piss on an institution that did not provide for you. You do not have to live under a table or on a beach to recieve funding assistance, that is ridiculous! My daughter is applying next year for Kindergarten and I have an application for Preschool funding. As an alumni, if I don't get it, I move on. Find other means that match my budget and TRY AGAIN!!! Think positive and pass the positives on to your keiki. That is all I have to say about that....

I think this is a great idea, but it would sure help if they would extend this benefit to the other ages as well. I am a proud graduate of Kailua High School. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to attend Kamehameha, but public schools back then were very respectable, unlike they are now. As a result, it's a struggle to send my child to a private school, but it's a necessary sacrifice, though our State still uses my tax dollars to fund public education. As a result, I believe this benefit could sure do a lot of older, pre-college Native Hawaiians good too!
