Do the Bishop Estate Trustees have any kind of background knowledge in education and instruction, i.e. how and what kind of information should be conveyed to students in classroom? What do they do? Do they know how many Native Hawaiian students in the DOE do not read at grade level? Do they care? Or do they just make sure no money is withdrawn from their endowment? JMiguel

When you look online for information, there's not much about the real life in Hawaii...of course when the fairy dust settles, you see the real life...Mainlanders think Hawaii is just a tropical paradise getaway, when they don't think-oh yeah-these people have to work too...it has become the haves and havenots...lots of people like me hate having to re-locate to the mainland because everything's too expensive in Hawaii but that's a sacrifice I have temporarily made for now. I still have family in Hawaii and will definitely retire in Hawaii....read the other forums on Starbulletin and you'll get lots of opinions...and try take a drive around the island, no just stay in Kahala...

DEAR UR CRAZY: Poverty parents do not engage their children in conversation, do not read aloud to them and do not convey much world knowledge and vocabulary to their kids. But universal preschool could prevent most of this from happening...so these kids could enter school with more world knowledge and vocabulary. These poverty kids struggle in school, dropout, commit crimes and get sent to prison. KSBE could help prevent a lot of this. Can you wrap your brain around this concept? Please allow yourself to do some lateral thinking. A lot of people in Hawai'i can't. JMiguel ==========
UR CRAZY QUOTED: You can not blame Kamehameha Schools for all those Hawaiians in Jail. Even educated people go to jail, its about CHOICES! Anyone who ends up in jail, can not and should blame there 1)Parents 2)Enviroment 3) Lack of education 4)Or anyone else! What about people who have come from worse situations and have thrived. STOP Complaining and START doing!

Rejected twice wrote: I applied twice for the Pauahi Keiki Scholarship and was twice denied. I have two pre-schoolers. My husband and I aren't rich -- but Kamehameha thinks so. We don't live beyond our means -- we don't have car loans; we don't have credit card debt because we don't buy what we can't afford; we buy stuff on sale; we don't go on trips and we try to save a buck here and there where we can. But apparently, this makes us too "rich" to qualify for aid. I don't get it. Do we need to be in debt so we qualify for aid? It's not fair. I feel your pain.....my family is not rich by any stretch of the imagination, but I guess we are according to THEM? No Pauahi scholarship for my daughter this year. I wish I were as rich as they think I am.

If you and Betty don't like what you see here, maybe you should both move back to the mainland. There is a lot of history that has caused much pain and anger for the Hawaiians. Find some time to read about the history ands struggles us Hawaiians had to endure.

This is so typical of the local people...no matter what Kamehameha Schools does, its not enough. Everyone knows someone or is related to someone who was denied admission to the school and because of that, they feel Kamehameha should be doing more. Just because you're Hawaiian, it does not entitle you to anything. This goes for myself as well. As a parent, we're held responsible to make sure our children our educated and whether its a private school or public school, its all up to the child and parent in what they accomplish. Stop complaining about what you don't have or what Kamehameha should be providing you and start working on making the most out of where you're at.

How nice for the Hawaiian kids but what about all the other deserving children of this state who are just as if not more qualified BUT aren't Hawaiian qualified. Some day some ultra wealthy Chinese or Japanese family will setup a trust to 'support' only Chinese or Japanese kids...then lets see how fair and great this program is!

More goodness will come. Just trust them and spare all of us your whinings and silly naggings. Remeber, they are on your side. Is it now that we all chant and dance the hula...

And stop the "perpetuity" crap..it;s sickening. Go visit one of our prisons and count the number of Native Hawaiians inside the cages. There's no excuse for this when there is a multi-billion dollar trust established to help Hawaiians who live below the poverty line. If KSBE were in the Bible they would be stoned to death. JMiguel OBSERVER QUOTED: That's telling em! Yes, they do have a lot of money but it must be perpetuated for many years to come for all campuses. They subsidize a great portion of the students tuition now. Can anyone imagine if a student had to cover the entire cost of a private school education. But the perpetual decision remains. Do you take the best of the best academically or do you take all. The best and the brightest will succeed anywhere. What is up with you? Do not put the blame for the Kanaka Maoli in Prison or the jail system on Kamehameha Schools. No one told them to do wrong or drugs or whatever it may be that put them there. It is not only Kanaka Maoli, Samoan, Japanese, Caucasian... All races. It is so funny that people want to say what and where other moneys should go or be used. Would you do all the things you are mouthing off about if it was your money? Get a life but oh yeah I forgot you are one of those people who like to stir up crap.

Wondering Out Loud

This is past due! I could never understand why KSBE enrolled only the brightest and the most advantaged, who would succeed WITHOUT KSBE's assistance. KSBE should be creating opportunities for the less educated and less advantaged to encourage the less fortunate and assist them in succeeding. I'm sure this would meet with the Queen's approval!

Just look at all the hate that's on Craigslist Rant and Raves. It isn't just Hawaiians who are angry...there's a lot of people of different racial extractions who live in Hawaii who are pretty P.O.'d too. Your post could possibly show why you get this bad attitude from local people (not just Hawaiians). You come to Hawaii with money, immediately move into Kahala, then bad mouth the people who live here and want to make changes to suit you and your preconcieved notions about how this place should be. Perhaps you should move back to the continent like you suggest. By the way, the way to realy get people who live here angry is to stay stuff like "I recently moved to Oahu from the United States". Hawaii has been part of the United States since 1959 (as a State). Did you think you didn't need a passport to get here because you were well liked? This deeply rooted scar from the past is a festering oozing sore that has never healed, as you would know if you did even the slightest amount of reseach prior to your arrival here.

I didn't know about Craigslist?! Oh well...great post. Took th words out of my mouth. Why is it when people travel to exotic places, they DO expect things to be exactly the same as it is in their hometown? What's the purpose of traveling? They expect the conveniences of home and grumble when things 'aren't the same' as their hometown/state...People like Betty should have researched further, read all about Hawaii, and read forums like these. Don't rely on travel magazines to guide your way then be disappointed-just do plain old research!

Please someone build K-12 schools and preschools for all Native Hawaiian children who live below the poverty line. I'm tired of seeing these kids struggling in school. What is the dropout rate for Native Hawaiian students in the DOE? I believe Princess Pauahi wanted a school for Hawaiian children who were mostly "indigent"...I think that means poor. The Kamehameha grads who go off to a mainland college don't need Kamehameha Schools' help...they can make it anywhere. It's the poverty Hawaiian students who need the KS help. Just ask Oz Stender.
