To JMiguel who's so smart about spending other people's money: how much do you contribute to education or charities (apart from paying taxes...we all pay taxes). As for the $9 billion...lots of that is in Hawaii land. You saying KS should sell the land?

Here's how $9 billion breaks out: you can spend it all by giving 12 year scholarships ($15K/yr) to 50,000 kids. Sounds like a lot, but after that: PAU. Yeah I know it sounds great if your kid is one of the 50,000...but are you willing to say that the endowment is only for this generation of kids and poho any other generation? People may it sound like $9 billion is huge. It is, but not as big as you think and not enough to solve every problem Hawaiians have.(BTW, look at Harvard's $30+ billion endowment---why the heck do people give to them? They don't need the money AT ALL!)

So mahalo, Kamehameha, this is visionary. And neva mind the critics who don't give nothing of their own but are quick to criticize others' giving!

Do you know how much money Kamehameha Schools has as its endowment vs. how many Hawaiian kids they serve or could serve with more schools? I think many of you posting comments are innumerate. Do you know how much $1,000,000,000 a year is and many times that in their coffers? They spend $221,000,000 a year on just three schools. That is more than the TOTAL ENDOWMENT of the wealthiest prep schools in the nation.
JMiguel
Just think how much more the school could have had if the greedy democratic party and supreme court judges didn't siphon it our for personal gain.

My daughter was just denied the Pauahi scholarship because we (her parents) made too much money in 2007. She's going from participating two years in the Kamehameha pre-school to a private school on Kauai because there is no Kamehameha school on the island that the children here can move right in to. Please build a school here so these children can continue on. By the way, how much is too much money?

Good start. I hope this program expands and helps many children. I am very glad that people are looking outside of the box to help the kids. This would never of happened under the former trustees.

Just wondering, if the private schools don't expand their classes, then some non-hawaiian kids will be denied admission due to the increase in the applicant pool. Just sad that the public education system is so inadequate that private educations is even needed. Oh well, keep electing the same folks that perpetuate this situation.

DEAR NEVAH HAPPY:
I didn't say "ALL OF THE $$$)...they have several BILLION dollars...do you know how much money that is?(It's not like they're going to run out of money.) I'm tired of seeing Hawaiian children who live below the poverty line entering school with 1/4th the world knowledge and vocabulary of the middle class kids. These kids struggle in school, dropout, begin committing crimes and then are sent to jail. Have you visited one of our prisons lately. When you do visit count how many Native Hawaiians are living there inside a cage. 30% of adult Hawaiians are functionally illiterate. Additionally 80% of all DOE students do not read at grade level.
("This is a step in the right direction?" How many Hawaiian kids are they giving tuition assistance to?) Give me a freaking break.

Ten years ago the number of Hawaiian children given "Kamehameha" benefits were 3-4 times less. In another 10 years the number effected will grow. They are doing what the Princess wanted them to do. It is perfect? No. Did it take too long to get to this point? YES! But it is a good thing! Kamehameha is moving faster than the government, it is richer than the government, but still too slow for some grumpy Hawaiians. Spread a little Aloha. I mua!

DEAR CPR 27:
Regarding KSBE building a school on Kaua'i...$9-$15,000,000,000 just doesn't go as far as it used to. The school/estate only brings in $1,000,000,000 a year. Sorry.

DEAR MELISSA;
You're right. Let's continue filling up our prisons with Native Hawaiians...and let KSBE keep their money in a bank. Many financial experts think the Hawai'i land worth is based on a 1967 appraisal, i.e. 40 years ago. So they many think KSBE has much more than $9,000,000,000.
HOW ABOUT JUST BUILDING SCHOOLS FOR THE HAWAIIAN KIDS WHO LIVE BELOW THE POVERTY LINE?
Cheers,
JMiguel

It's about time.

I'd also like to see a new school
either in Waimanalo or the Waianae/
Nanakuli area for these Hawaiian children.(After all, aren't these the areas where you have the largest concentration of Hawaiian?)

Mahalo.

MELISSA:
Most Kamehameha grads go off to the mainland for college and never return.
Almost 50% of all Hawaiians on the planet no longer live in Hawai'i. It's the poverty Hawaiians living in Hawai'i that we & KSBE need to help. I think that's what Pauahi wanted...don't you?

You can not blame Kamehameha Schools for all those Hawaiians in Jail. Even educated people go to jail, its about CHOICES!
Anyone who ends up in jail, can not and should blame there 1)Parents 2)Enviroment 3) Lack of education 4)Or anyone else! What about people who have come from worse situations and have thrived. STOP Complaining and START doing!

At one time there was talk of KSBE taking over schools from the DOE in the predominantly Hawaiian areas such as Nanakuli and Waianae but I dont know what happened with that. Historically, the DOE has done a poor job of educating students in those areas. Another problem in those areas are the lack of support from parents who themselves have been poorly educated. Drug and alcohol abuse in those areas agravate the problem. A new school in those areas would help but I think you need to send the parents back to school first.

I am a working single parent, who has been blessed with 3 children 2 whom have graduated from Kamehameha and my last son will be graduating this year. Their are well rounded adults now and educated by the Pauahi Trust, but my children worked very hard to get to where they are today. It did not get handed to them, like some Hawaiians feel that it should. Hard Work and Dedication is what more of us Hawaiians need, do not talk about struggle, as human's everyone struggles not just Hawaiians!

It's important......becuase it is what ......and then think about how it does.....so no matter where I can see that the message is. Take the turn, and that is what I hope to get to the store.

Better late than never...and it would be even better if the estate could set aside most of its revenues for Pre-K through post-graduate study through internships, scholarships, tuition waivers, etc. regardless of academic potential and/or financial need. Mahalo Nui Loa
