What about the kids who are not in kindergarden. Why cant they do it for all ages who are Hawaiian. I would love to get my kids into a private school being that I totally dont believe in the public school system but I cant afford it. Its a great start but is there anything out there for students who are in elementary school already?

ELININATE THE UNFAIR PRACTICE THAT KAMEHAMEHA HAS BEEN DOING ALL THESE YEARS OF ENROLLING FREINDS AND THIER CHILDREN ISTEAD OF GIVING THE KIDS WHO REALLY DESERVE ENROLLMEWNT. HOW CAN THE SAY MY SON DID NOT PASS A ENTRANCE TEST , BUT AT THE SAME TIME PASSED THE IOLANI ENTRANCE TEST. PLEASE DO NOT TELL ME HIS STRAIGHT A REPORT CARD IS NOT FROM A REPUTABLE SCHOOL (MCKINLEY). How can this be????

This is a great program--one that is long overdue. Kamehameha's efforts to reach more and more Hawaiian children will positively impact our next generation. Keep up the good work, Kamehameha! I Mua!

A good idea but the numbers mentioned hardly scratch the surface.
Kamehameha schools needs to reach the kids in the worst situations, not those who are in good situations and are already motivated. Right now they select the best and brightest. Although that may genetically fulfil the mission of the school is hardly improves the lot of those Hawaiian children most in need and for whom many believe the trust was intended.

Fo those who criticize, Auwe! KS does so much for our state and our keiki - KS students or not. There are programs that "help those kids who need it most". Too much to list as a matter of fact. Educate yourselves before you comment!
The admissions process is fair without bias. Give credit to the students and parents of those students who earned their invitations to the school. For the parent who's child was accepted into another private school and not Kamehameha - did you call the admissions office to discuss your child's test - you can find out why your child did not get in.
No one is entitled to anything.
Instead of saying they don't do enough - why can't you simply say thanks for once.

Good stuff; I have advocated this for a long time. I have cousins on the mainland whose kids have as much hawaiian as mine. They struggle as hard as I do to pay for private education. They are working towards Being doctors, lawyers and businessmen. They are kanaka maoli, extending the reach of the aloha that is part of the soul of a hawaiian.

This is a good day for the hawaiian. I hope the benefits can go farther than just hawaii residents that are 4 years old.

Mahalo to Kamehameha.

This is a step in the right direction. This program will infuse Kamehameha into the broader community and hopefully, maybe one day, private schools will have the opportunity to fulfill Princess Pauahi's legacy.

Let me get this straight. We don't have room for you poverty Hawaiians at our school but we'll take some of our $9-18,000,000,000 to pay for a few of you to go to other schools? Did I get that right? I guess $9,000,000,000 just doesn't go as far as it used to.

Why doesn't Kamehameha Schools Bishop Estate build
preschools and K-12 schools for all Hawaiian kids who live below the poverty line? It's not as if they don't have any money is it? They bring in over $1,000,000,000 a year. What do they do with the extra $800,000,000 that they don't spend running their three schools every year?

KSBE has $9,000,000,000 but many financial experts say they may have twice that amount. How many Hawaiian kids are getting financial aid/scholarships to go to private schools in Hawai'i? PLEASE BUILD SCHOOLS/PRESCHOOLS FOR ALL HAWAIIAN KIDS WHO LIVE BELOW THE POVERTY LINE. How much does it cost to build a school? Okay then...how about buying a laptop for all Hawaiian kids in the state...and pay for their monthly Internet bill?

Congratulations Kamehameha Schools! A huge step in the right direction, non-the-less the issue of the Princess Will benefactors being low income needs to be addressed. What a life changing experience to send an economically disadvantaged child to a private school. It not only changes his or her destiny but affects all of the people they come in contact with. I hope at least 50% of the students benefiting from this program come from families with real financial need.

Do you know how much money Kamehameha Schools has as its endowment vs. how many Hawaiian kids they serve or could serve with more schools? I think many of you posting comments are innumerate. Do you know how much $1,000,000,000 a year is and many times that in their coffers? They spend $221,000,000 a year on just three schools. That is more than the TOTAL ENDOWMENT of the wealthiest prep schools in the nation.

@JMiguel - You think that all of the $$$ that they have has to go to all hawaiian kids? So you are saying that they should spend all of their money so that they can fund for everyone without thinking of the perpetuity of the endowment and the other things that KS does? The schools are only one portion of the whole. You are one of the many people who think that the school does not do enough. At least it is a step in the right direction. They are trying to start a long lasting program that will benefit all Hawaiians. It is a long term goal and the effects will not be seen for many years. Do not be so short sighted and want for the instant gratification.
