Kam School is for the ones with the Hawaiian blood line. I am not Hawaiian but I respect the rule for what it is.

The surface level argument of discrimination has no merit - the will specified Hawaiian -blooded children. BUT, the will also mandated, just as it did for ethnicity, that it was to be used to educate the NEEDY ("THE INDIGENT CHILDREN"). Obviously not the BE/KS total focus of admission as prescribed in the will. Coupled with a weak attempt to grow more schools proportionate with Estate assets, BE/KS has failed to adhere to the Queens compassionate goal of preparing the people to keep pace with the modernity that lay ahead.

I just came across these postings and perhaps this is a bit belated, but I feel I have to express a few opinions that I have. I am an alumni of Kamehameha AND I have no animosity towards anyone who is of a different culture or ethnic origin. I believe many people posting are misinformed.
1. At the Kamehameha Schools, almost all ethnic groups are represented. White, African, Japanese, Samoan, Chinese, Filipino, and so forth- they just happen to be part Hawaiian.
2. The reality is that those who pursue action against the School are really all about land and money- think of it this way- If Pauahi had 1/25 of an acre and five bucks- Would anyone be attacking her legacy?
3. The Kamehameha Schools was a gift to the keiki of Hawaii. I repeat A Gift! When a gift is given it is not for the government to regulate it or to tell the beneficiaries what they have to do with it- the government cannot put stipulations on it. The School does not receive any federal funding so it is not subject to government regulation.( If I receive an Ipod as a gift- no one can tell me what songs to put on it )
In conclusion, all those people screaming "racism" are misinformed. Those who chastise the School - move on there are more imortant issues out there. Remember- criticize all you want, but at least admit that its all about the money.
3.
I graduated from Kamehameha, too.

KS represents the power of our people. Thank you, Bernice and Charles!

Nowadays people will say just about anything because they want to try to take it down because they feel threatened.

There is now a new breed of Hawaiians like us. Whenever one person tries to impede on our rights, there will be 10 of us to stand up against it.

Please remember that the will is interpreted in a historical context and its translations evolves based on contemporary needs.

What Queen? Do you even know the history?

Also, rememeber that the there are several trusts that were specifically set up for Hawaiian kids that are no longer operating as such. Our ali'i took care of their people and with KS they still do.

Yes, the world has changed, but the will hasn't.

This will isn't from some archeological dig...the legalese is simple and straightforward. The indigenous children of indigent circumstances were the intended benefactors and that should never have changed. She had the wisdom to see that it was the only way to ensure that her people didn't endure endless cycles of ignorance and poverty.

"its translations evolves based on contemporary needs." Whose needs? The poor and underprileged that it was designed for? KS is a caricature of what it should be.
