Most airlines market directly to customers and also through travel agents. Broad Media Ads are commonly used by airlines to drive traffic to their booking sites or to their agents, also to enhance their image.
The extent to which their booking sites are customer friendly and customer focused may be used as a criteria to judge how good they are indirect marketing.
In this respect Air Asia as a budget airlines whose main draw is cheap tickets does an OK job. I have never visited the MAS site to book tickets...which means that their broad media advertising has made little impression on me that they had things to offer. I guess if you are a Malaysian, it may be a different.
The other more important component of airline marketing is the used of direct marketing strategies and communication for building customer relations and loyalty in the form of frequent flying clubs. In this respect the FFPs of most Asian airlines, even SIA pales when compared to those of US airlines.
However this does not mean they are less effective in marketing. They may have reviewed their situations objectively and have decided not to placed as much emphasis on such strategies.
Ultimately, it is not direct marketing for direct marketing sake, or loyalty clubs for loyalty club sake....its about how to best serve the organisation's stakeholders... the public, customers, employees, shareholders and governments.

Air Asia appears to be ripping off people who book on internet by taking the money on your credit card and "losing" your confirmed reservation. When you go for your flight, there is no record of the reservation and you have to pay again (if there is room) and at the same day rate, to actually get aboard the plane. No wonder you can't find the email address, Fiona! You probably want to change your confirmed reservation date or something, and can't get ahold of them (Air Asia). My recommendation would be to tell your credit card company the amount that you paid is in dispute. Let them handle Air Asia. You havn't got a chance by yourself. Good luck!
