I just got a phone call last week from "the Florida Police and Troopers Association" they said they were collecting money for the families of all the downed troopers this year. They urged me to donate over the phone via credit card. I almost fell for it then regained my senses. After a little research over the internet I could not find a single institution or police fraternity called the "Florida Police and Troopers Association" I can only conclude that they do not exist and that I almost got scammed.
I got the same call last week. Same exact excuse they used when I told them I didn't want to give my CC over the phone. So today I reeived a mailing, with me thanking me for my donation (I told them I'd send them a check). Here is the contact information on the letter: 1-866-391-6762. 1549 Ringling Blvd, 6th Floor, Sarasota, Fl 34236.

The letter says "a copy of official registration and financial information may be obtained from the division of consumer services by calling toll free 1-800-435-7352. REGISTRATION DOES NOT IMPLY ENDORSEMENT, APPROVAL OR RECOMMENDATION BY THE STATE".

Agree there isn't much out there. The parent organization is a policeman's union group, but does not display any of its financial or other information that would allow a donor to see where their money is going.

Is that possibly it? That's the one I used to work for. So ridiculous. The money doesn't go to actual troopers, although they pitch their calls like that. It just goes to the top command staff of the FHP that are never actually on the road. I always wondered what would possibly make someone donate to this, especially the way they made us pitch it.

Why don't you do the right thing and contact the attorney general's office. If the people you are working for are committing fraud then they should be prosecuted. How about stepping up?

What am i gonna say. Im sure there's people that already have contacted them and told them about it. It's not that there commeting fraud it's just that the families arnt getting "all" the money that we raise.last year we raised 5.2 million and 4.8 million of that was spent on "expences" and only 230,000.00 of that was to the families. and to be honest with you These police have life insurance and im not sure why we would have to do this in the first place. It's like duh the's are police that are putting there life on the line every day and im sure there not stupid and have a backup plan for there familey and get life insurance. the web site is www.iupa-fl.org

Well, the "Association" called me again tonight (this time they blocked their number). I told the guy that I think I'm just going to make a direct donation to the local police department here where I live. The guys starts by saying "but what about your pledge"... I interrupt him with "I've actually done a little research on your organization, and I really didn't like what I found". He's like "so I guess you won't be donating". You got that right bro. Later!

I will say this again. The people who argue that fund-raising is protected constitutional speech don't know what they are talking about. These calls are not for the purposes of protecting free speech but for raising money. I believe I have a right to privacy in my own home that supercedes other people's rights to try to get money out of me. The only reason these organizations are exempted is because of their strong lobbies. We the people don't have that clout.

And frankly, do I have the right to call a random phone number and harrass someone with my political views? Is that free speech?

Starting in Florida, a new organization of concerned citizens has formed Citizens for Ethical Non-profit Treasury Stewardship (“CENTS”) to highlight the fundraising practices of the Sarasota-based International Union of Police
Associations (“IUPA”) and their for-profit telemarketing contractor LAS, LLC.
Less Than 2% of Contribution Dollars Go To Charity
CENTS says:“Nearly everyone has gotten a call from a police organization asking for a
charitable contribution. We support our officers, but what IUPA is doing in their names
is shocking.” We need your help!! Please contact us at cents_fl@yahoo.com

I have been a telemarketer for 10 years. We raise money for civic organizations to fund programs for the community...free c.p.r. classes,a burn fund,a M.D.A. kids camp....etc. I need not bore you with the detials, but I will say this-I make a very comfortable living-I make more than many poor souls who are still paying off student loans with worthless college degrees. For those of you who would rather cost someone a job and take food from the families mouth- ratgher than being a man and picking up the phone and saying "no thank you"-I say you are a pathetic, self centered, typical stupid american-or heres a thaught turn your ringers of during dinner genious!(you probably dont know how to do that given the ignorance of most of your posts)and, for those of you who think I'ts clever to give the caller a hard time...keep it coming idiots, I garuntee you I can give it back to you tan fold,I have fun with the people who think your "getting under my skin" I thrive on it...and one more thing telemarketing is here to stay, It will never go away,I'ts a major part of the economy that happens to be sufering right now Einsteins! so keep crying about your privacy while We keep making the money machine go 'round..And one more thing why do most of you complainers always seem to be home at 2:00 p.m. on a tuesday? get a real job? how 'bout getting a job period ya, bums!

And how are you raisng funds to startr this "organization" Peter? how 'bout starting an organiztion to re-build new orleans? or maybe one to stop the drug companies in uor country from buying government policy? or maybe best of all an organization to eliminate people who have nothing better to do than waste time and money on miniscule, mindless efforts like what a telemarketer might say when they (god-forbid) waste 10 seconds of your precious day? C'mon Peter, lets apply yourself to more meanigful pursuits and maybe....wait...the phones ringing...OH GOD NO what ever will I do..Its the dreadful telemarketers again...thats it! Im gonna start an organization to stop this non-sense, and then I'm gonna petition the feds to start a national do not call list, and then I'm gonna buy a special device for my phone, and then I'm gonna get everyone of those bastards fired and put thousands of americans out of a job and then....and then maybe you'll wake up and realize what an ass you really are!

Look up iupa-fl.org that is the website for the florida police and troopers assc. They use to be the Florida State Troopers Local 6000. They changed because they now help the police as well. It was not a scam it is a real assc and one of the best to donate too.

I am sure you are the same person that wrote the comment a couple of days before this one and now you know exact numbers. LOL I know for a fact that you really do not know what you are talking about unless you are a manager and if you where I would know you. So if you are going to make comments know what you are talking about before you say it.
