How much is too much?

I work for a non-profit on the East Coast and am looking for opinions. How much do you all feel is too much to ask for regarding a donation through a direct mail. Our segment of donors give at least $1,000 -- so that should give you a start.
I know everyone is different and you break rules here and there, but does anyone feel $5,000-$10,000 is too much to ask for in the mail -- even if they have given that on their own through the mail? In the past, we have not asked for exact amounts.
