Probably the same conditions in the body causes stroke and gum disease.
No evidence shows one causes the other.

There are many many studies showing links between the two, not necessarily that one causes the other. I for one would rather err on the side of caution if two things are being linked together all the time by cancer societies, heart disease centers, and diabetes organizations...

I have heard that gum disease causes the body to digest many bad bacteria into the gut. These bacteria can migrate and cause infection of the heart. If you brush your teeth and your gums bleed, get to the dentist fast.
