Fluoride might justify price hike

It's been a pretty wet spring. Local reservoirs are full -- good news for our community if we have a drought this summer.

Over 1,700 professionals signed a statement urging Congress to stop water fluoridation until Congressional hearings are conducted. They cite new scientific evidence that fluoridation, long promoted to fight tooth decay, is ineffective and has serious health risks.(http://www.fluorideacti on.org/statement.august.2007.h tml)

Signers include a Nobel Prize winner, three members of the prestigious 2006 National Research Council (NRC) panel that reported on fluoride’s toxicology, two officers in the Union representing professionals at EPA headquarters, the President of the International Society of Doctors for the Environment, and hundreds of medical, dental, academic, scientific and environmental professionals, worldwide.

Signer Dr. Arvid Carlsson, winner of the 2000 Nobel Prize for Medicine, says,“Fluoridation is against all principles of modern pharmacology. It's really obsolete.”

An Online Action Petition to Congress in support of the Professionals' Statement is available on FAN's web site, http://congress.fluorideaction.net and over 11,000 individuals have signed so far.

“The NRC report dramatically changed scientific understanding of fluoride's health risks," says Paul Connett, PhD, Executive Director, Fluoride Action Network. "Government officials who continue to promote fluoridation must testify under oath as to why they are ignoring the powerful evidence of harm in the NRC report,” he added.

The Professionals’ Statement also references:

-- The new American Dental Association policy recommending infant formula NOT be prepared with fluoridated water.
-- The CDC’s concession that the predominant benefit of fluoride is topical not systemic.
-- CDC data showing that dental fluorosis, caused by fluoride over-exposure, now impacts one third of American children.
-- Major research indicating little difference in decay rates between fluoridated and non-fluoridated communities.
-- A Harvard study indicating a possible link between fluoridation and bone cancer.
-- The silicofluoride chemicals used for fluoridation are contaminated industrial waste and have never been FDA- approved for human ingestion.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a DC watchdog, revealed that a Harvard professor concealed the fluoridation/bone cancer connection for three years. EWG President Ken Cook states,“It is time for the US to recognize that fluoridation has serious risks that far outweigh any minor benefits, and unlike many other environmental issues, it's as easy to end as turning off a valve at the water plant.”

Further, researchers reporting in the Oct 6 2007 British Medical Journal indicate that fluoridation, touted as a safe cavity preventive, never was proven safe or effective and may be unethical.(1)

Many communities rejected or stopped fluoridation over the years. See: http://www.fluoridealert.org/communities.htm

Maybe some more research would be in line. I also thought that dentists would be the go to knowledge people on fluoride. Not so. Most speak with one voice repeating verbatum the talking points of the ADA. Indiana tested dental professionals and discovered that only 17% understood the new science of how fluoride works. Almost all still believed the disproved theory that ingested fluorides made childrens teeth cavity resistant. All the science shows Primary benefit is topical and systemic value to be unmeasurable. The logic behind ingesting was a pipe dream sold by industry with lots of toxic fluoride wastes to dispose of and a landslide of lawsuits for damage. The CDC has sold this false theory and the ADA was hooked. It is the cover stioy for the dentists to hide the very sad fact that most dentists refuse to treat poof kids. You could get poor doing that. Fluoride in the water has become the default care because dentists refuse. Many cities do not have a single dentist who will serve the poor on medicaid. Many counties do not have a single public health dentist. The ADA fights tooth and nail to prevent any workable solution to protect dental incomes.
Fluorides legacy is now proven to be visable damage of multiple teeth of defective enamel that is porous and discolored and especially in blacks pitted and crumbling with dark brown and black stains. This dental fluorosis is the only outward biomarker of fluoride poisoning and marks you for life. The current science shows it is also a marker for fluorides other risks such as bone damage and neurotoxicity like lowered IQ and behavior issues.
Dentists have made the best of this huge increase in ugly teeth and cosmetic restoration has shot dental incomes from below doctors to far surpassing with less hours worked. Its sort of like the CDC with Titanic policy is to ram the iceburg and the ADA has the life boat concession. No free seats here. This conflict of interest should raise some eyebrows and reporters should consider there part in this program which looks a lot like a con game.
Show us the FDA approval for this medical treatment.
Show one health study with emperical data on the H2SiF6 product used direct from pollution scrubbers.
Show one current study that topical is not how fluoride works.
Show data that drinking and eating is topical.
Show some effort to disclose both sides.
A real debate has dialog and science.
Fluoridealert.org for current science and videos of researchers. Jim Schultz

Since when does adding a toxic waste from the phosphate fertilizer industry (fluoride) increase the value of your water? In the entire realm of human history, no human ever "needed" fluoride until it became abundant as a waste product 60 years ago, following manufacture of nuclear weapons. Then, for the first time ever, we were told that we "needed" fluoride for our teeth. Kentucky is about 100% fluoridated, and leads the country with the highest rate of tooth decay and total tooth loss.

There should be no argument about this. Fluoride is very inexpensive and is available at any pharmacy as a nutritional supplement. Those who want it can stop by after wrk today and buy all they need. Those who choose not to ingest it can go on drinking the York Water Company's fine product without fear of being medicated against their wills.

Why would anyone want to add a toxic poison to drinking water ? How stupid is that ?

Mary Sparrowdancer- The AEC (atomic energy commission) was the force behind fluoridation and was granted the authority to rewrite fluoride studies and did to make an evil product healthy. The government felt it justified to protect the atom bomb project from litigation as you can not make a nuke without tons of fluoride. They make millions of pounds and damaged lots of workers but hid proof from workers to avoid workmans comp. You can read in the Fluoride Deception by Bryson. Lots of documents and Freedom of information releases that show fraud and deception by our leaders and the agencies that should protect us but instead protect industry. Jim Schultz

Please STOP fluoride ingestion. We get enough from our toothpaste, and we spit that out. Fluoride is the most reactive halogen. It is not a heavy metal, however it still is very TOXIC. Please stop!

This whole thing is ridiculous. Conserving water is something that we all need to do. The water company should cut high paid administrative positions that cannot properly justify a rate increase.
The water rates for this area are too high, they should think about a decrease.

Dan maybe you did not know but most cities made a big profit from water and then use it for general fund without informing customers. After robing the funds then they get rate increases. Yes we should conserve water but we should not add a contaminate that can not be removed and can injure people at added levels. Lots of things can be ridiculous. Do something to change them. I don't think it is appropriate for a newspaper to endorse anything that involves the drugging the population of a state, against the will of many of its citizens. The full facts were not even presented in the article making it thoroughly irresponsible propaganda. What ever happened to sound journalism serving its readership? Friends, House Bill 1649 is completely unethical - please contact your state representative and tell them to kill this insane piece of legislation before it kills us.
