One thing to consider, especially in the Linen's-N-Things bankruptcy are the consumers holding gift cards. I work for a company that manages and tracks gift cards, and we blogged about the LNT incident a few days ago on savvywallet.com . According to The Tower Group, there is approximately $42m in gift card that hasn't been spent, affecting 400,000 people.

If The SLUM-SENTINEL continues to wage a media smear campaign, like the one by Paul Owers, to scare away home buyers the South Florida business bankruptcy rate will increase by 1000%! Hopefully, The SLUM-SENTINEL will account for one of them. It's amazing that The SLUM-SENTINEL would continue to cite as authoritative sources in it's vicious attacks on real estate the following Wall Street shills determined to divert money from housing back into the stock market:

A. THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
B. MOODY'S ECONOMY
C. S&P
D. LEHMANN BROTHERS
C. MERRILL LYNCH
E. FIDELITY INVESTMENTS

In addition, Owers' uses a masked gang of FORECLOSURE CONSULTANT'S which he regularly MASQUERADES as impartial real estate experts in his front page attacks on South Florida real estate.

LOWER TAXES and you will see a TURN AROUND. Greedy politicians, still don't see that the State is sinking faster and faster in a QUICK-SAND, specially South Florida. This is going to be a GHOST TOWN pretty soon if they don't FIX THE TAX PROBLEM SOONNNNNNNNNNNNNNN.

how is it that 80% of Americans know we are in a recession and Bush is in denial?
Just wish the whole Bush family would move to another country. Be done with them. Just GO!

I enjoy the simplistic answers put forth by some posters . I am no fan of Bush but to assume he runs the economy is pure folly. The problem will be increased when Obama is elected because he will increase the size of the federal government just as GW Bush did . The economy will improve on it owns the problem is when Mr.Obama and the huge democratic majorities that put into office after this election the government will expanded so much I doubt we will feel any benefits of an upturn in the economy. Lets see national health insurance for all for ever I am sure that wont be cheap :) you can tax the rich all you like but at the end of the day it will be the middle class you will end up paying for all these entitlements

Also it should be noted liberal politicians have prohibited the building of Oil refineries , the exploration of new oil , are against the use of coal , against nuclear power and before the last two years have openly advocated higher gas prices to discourage consumption. We are going to be paying 6 dollars a gallon in the next 4 years not that Obama cares.

It's clear that South Florida's lack of a real economy has been exposed. We have the cleanest air in the country - which is great - until you realize it's because there's no industry here.

This is easy to figure out.

STOP LIVING BEYOND YOUR MEANS!!!

If you are a bank teller, dont try to live like you are a bank manager.

The whole reason the housing market flopped was because middle classed people got fooled by unethical mortgage brokers into believing they could afford a half million dollar home on a $50k per year income.

To declare a recession, you must have two consecutive quarters of negative growth. Unfortunately, that hasn't happened. The economy is flat but it is not shrinking. With that said, if you keep reading this paper and watching the liberal media, you'll be drinking their kool-aid and believing all they say. Election year, just remember that. Once Obama gets elected, the economy is back on track. Then get ready for your massive tax hikes to sponsor all those entitlement programs he'll be forcing on to you.

I feel sad of you without education, loosing business, foreclosure, people should of know better to no buy bigger than they can afford. The American Dream, I would called it the American Nightmare, but for me I am very happy, I am buying foreclosure every week on pennies on dollar, good the rich are getting richer and poor then we know the answer

I agree, South Florida hasn't done enough to lure big companies to the state. We've always counted on tourism and taxing tourist, but that's money that can dry out quickly. We need to go after technology companies, improve our education system to support these companies, and make it more affordable for them to be a part of it all. Local and State government is throwing money out the door at an alarming rate, and till this day, have yet to realize it and cutback.

Lower taxes I keep hearing that but do you really understand what happens. Check your fees and you will see how the GOP sticks it to you. In fact fees are worst because they effect you on a level that you can't manage.
