It would be great for folks interested in this article to view www.stopclearcuttingcalifornia.org and www.savethesierra.org . Then also get on Caliornia's Air Resource Board Web site and do other work to uncover the huge environmental fines that SPI has incurred while operating it's mills. In fact the most recent air fine was one of the largest ever in California and included falsification of records etc. Also go on to counties air and water websiteds whereever they operate to see other environmental fines for water and environmental site contamination violations. The list goes on and on. Google "sierra pacific industries"and lawsuit and discover the class action suit won by SPI truckers for various abuses. Do your own research and determine the facts- thats what citizens in a demoncracy should do when they are being told "trust us", "we are good guys" the "science is on our side.... Don't be fooled again!

People should face a firing squad for record falsification, a couple public executions and the madness will end. We must demand they play by the rules and should form a Citizen Group that would have more power than the air board-, and we could get those bastards. We just need a ballot measure that would allow this to happen.
They are a scourge on the area and have completely destroyed Northern California for 10,000 years.

WOW! This could be monumental. For the first time in history, the North Coast and the Sierra Nevada will be fighting a common enemy, SPI. Imagine what this will do for the movement for sustainable forestry. We have been batling SPI in the Sierra for almost 10 years now, and since we are not in the redwoods it is hard for us to gain significant momentum and stop this destruction. Now that SPI will again have a massive presence in Humboldt Co. we can get the redwood loving environmentalists to become aware of the situation in the Sierra. Get ready for the Final Showdown. We already took down hurowitz, now is the time to take down Emmerson.

YOU ARE AN IDIOT.... Tree Huggers like you are the reason that there are former loggers and millworkers on welfare. Hurowitz was definately an ass... Emmerson? he worked for what he has, starting out pulling greenchain. Go ask him, he is probably the most approchable and open millionare you will ever meet. It was the hard work and vision of people like the Emmersons, Mel Mclean, The Murphys, John Vance and other "lumber barrons" who made this a great place. Unfortunately it was the vile work of opportunists like Hurowitz who allowed idiots like you to class one dumb Texas in the same category as these visionaries... GO HUG A STUMP, and dont step on any of the seedlings that have been replanted

Wrong on so many counts. Half right on everything else. Red is not a visionary. He did not write that article. When you meet Red, ask him to tell you the John Crook story. He is not a saint.

I think the forest service should be working with emmerson the hayfork area would be a great place for a small log mill in the future . The large timber companys need to get away from the coast because to many people are going moving into the area that can,t see the forest for the lumber..

This would take us from one nightmare to the another. Though I fully expect the judge in Texas to award the wolves the remnants of PL, I had some hope that the MRC/Marathon plan might be chosen...as it was by far the best of several less than great options.

to divorce the mill and town from the land is a tearing I can not deal with.

The comments from "you gotta be kidding" from above are what I expect from ignorance of the entire history, development of the resources in Humboldt, and the reality of final battles playing out over badly abused land and watersheds.

Those comments are from the Humboldt I left and am glad to only suffer in "the news."

In regards to the Emmerson family and the now SPI, it all started with Red's father, Curley Emmerson and the mill in Manila...I believe.

Forest defenders here are totally aware of the destructive practices of SPI across California.

If Emmerson wants to bring his companies practices into the 21st century he needs to stop clearcutting and implement selective logging only. If Pacific Lumber had been doing that for the lasrt 20 years instead of liquidating we would not be seeing the large amount of laid off workers or environmental damage that we see now in places like Freshwater and Elk river.

To forest watcher:
Hurwitz ruined Pacific Lumber and the forests through his policy of rapid liquidation. We did not bring PL down, Hurwitz did, and no one has brought him down, if only we were that effective.

I think that enviros should shift from campaigns focused on one company to campaigns focused on logging practices that are unnacceptable no matter who is doing them.
