With the economic slowdown as bad as it is did we not see this coming? The housing industry sucks right now but things will get better. As for this union thing........well, if you think the union could prevent a lay off from happening you are sadly mistaken and even more misguided than I originally thought. The union couldn't prevent CSN employees from getting laid off. Do you honestly think that having a union come in here can prevent the economy from taking a nose dive and things slowing down like they have? If you think that working hard for 4 hours a week to pay the "club" dues is a benefit than think about this. Four hours at say and average of $14 an hour X 52 weeks =$3120 per year. Now, I don't know about you but I refuse to lose that money that I have worked so hard to earn for my family. How much would that buy for you and your family? Ask yourself that question when you start to think about getting this stupid union in here. Ask yourself how much you will get paid when you go on strike! Nothing, zero, zip, NADA!!!!!! No unemployment, no nothing! I for one cannot afford that. Union representation means you lose your voice. I am perfectly capable of speaking for myself thank you very much!

You do not loose your voice!! You gain one that you can not imagine. I earn 27.34 an hour plus benefits. I have a pension and a annuity great health, eye and dental none of those things are taken out of my check. I do pay union dues to keep people in office to protect my work that cost me 35.00 a month total cost for the year 420.00. I will agree no union will prevent you from getting laid off because I get laid off all the time but i still cleared 60,000.00 in 2008. I work tons of overtime that pays time and a half after an 8 hour day and double time after 10. time and half on Saturday and double time on holidays and Sunday. I would look closer at a union before you completely make up your mind.

In a way you do loose your voice because everything has to be voted on. Yeah you can voice your opion to your rep, but that does not mean that it will be heard. Yeah it all sounds nice from what you have stated about your earnings, but that is no gaurente that will happen in our situation. Especially with the way the economy is right now, I don't feel that we would get those great OT packages, medical benefits...etc. I feel that we will get the shaft. The union will promise us a lot, but deliver on very little. That is how they manipulate people into joining. You have shown that a union works for you, but I know that it will not work for us. My opion on the whole sittuation at hand is that the folks that are unhappy need to find another job. Why take all of the hard workers that are happy down with them?

I doubt you pay $32 in union dues. Railroaders pay over $100 and they don't clear the money you are allegedly making.

Houses aren't being built. There are too many nice places, in all price ranges, for sale at rock bottom prices. Why build new at the going rate???

I seriously doubt Certainteed will hang around if a union is forced down their throats!!

And your union is????? How long have you been at this employer to make 27.00 an hour? Your over time is most likely mandantory over time. You didn't mention your employer either, be nice since so many here are unemployed right now, maybe some are qualified enough to apply. Share in the wealth my brother share.....maybe my husband can apply and move back from Massachusetts where he is employed now and come home so we can be a family again. For those who don't understand my daughters and myself still live in TH, they are both in high school we decided it would be for their best interest to stay behind and Dad to take the job out of state. Yeah it sucks, but we make it work.So share please.......

Good for you. I probably can't afford to buy your product/service. The company has to charge quite a bit to cover those benefits. I have to buy the non-union/imported version...

"The union couldn't prevent CSN employees from getting laid off."
What are you talking about? CSN laid off 30 some employees last April due to them doing away with a production line. Since then nobody laid off. CSN is cutting other things other than jobs in this hard time, while many other steel mills have already laid off and shut down. CSN is still fully employeed and they are non-union. Way to go CSN!
Also, most of CSN's employees do make over $60,000 per year with no union.

Ahhh Barf Vandersuck again. Another comment from the mal-informed under-educated union wanna-be wretch. Why do you think French companies relocate here Dr. Weinerstein? Because in France, they are already taxed 1/3 more in corporate taxes and the Unions run amock(that means all over in little talk barf)and drive corporations away, but if Obama, the Messiah gets his way and pays the unions back for their contributions, then our corps. will do the same! Get a life and an education Barf! Now go back to your union mandated 30 min coffee break!

Work tons of overtime? Why? Do you not know what you are doing? My guess is, judging by the alledged amount of dues you pay. I'd say you work in the construction trades. Good for you! Glad you are providing a good life for yourself.
I too made that much and then some. I didn't pay dues either. I do just fine speaking for myself.

when my husband was in the "union" it didn't do shit for us. i had a baby, and ended up paying a lot of the bill. the company closed and he received a severance package with was nothing. some people were taken care of nicely, but not the ones actually doing the physical labor. i work in a factory , every once in awhile someone will bring up the union, and the majority will tell them to shutup, we do not want them.

As a Terre Haute employee, I resent the fact that people are speaking for me! I am an adult and I can speak for myself! I made more money last year than i have ever made and i was treated very well by our company. We have a great benefits package now. Why on earth in these hard times would i want to voluntarily give any portion of my check to a union to negotiate for me what i already have?!!! THINK PEOPLE!!!! We do not have any need for a union!!!!
