BIG AL and THE OWLS, a short story.
During the closure operations of Mare Island Naval Shipyard, senior managers were assigned to inventory and close down buildings. One such building was the "Round House", now known as Pacific Sports Center the last I saw it. During the closing out of the Round House, workers noticed an owls nest with young owls up near the high windows. They also observed that the mother owl would fly out thru an open window to hunt for food for the young ones. The workers advised the senior manager in charge that even though the building could be locked down to prevent human entry, a window near the nest would be left open to allow the mother owl to hunt. The senior manager directed the workers to close down the entire building without variation as he had to sign off that the building was completely closed out. It did not matter that the window to be left open was 40 feet off the ground near the roof. The manager was not sympathetic to the fact that the owls would starve if the window were closed. So the workers closed the window only after making sure the mother was inside the building. Some days past and one of the workers went back in to check on the owls and found all of them not alive. One of the workers named Big Al constructed a monument to the owls and placed it in the adjacent small park near the Round House. Big Al was called in and threatened with termination for doing this and directed to remove the monument from the park.
The monument now is in the collection of the museum on the West side of Bldg. 46 and that is the last place I saw it. It is a white concrete block with a steel owl on top.
Glad to see that the Ospreys are being regarded quite differently.

Thank you for the story of the Owls and Big Al.

The monument's story will be lost in time and discarded if the story is not with it. Perhaps you have helped that from happening.

Blessings, and thanks.
