I never understand why people keep smoking by knowing the fact that there is no benefit to them whatsoever. Can someone explain to me?

People who are already addicted to smoking don't care that it will kill them. They know that already. Education needs to be targeted at young people to prevent them from ever starting the habit.

I agree, I think more emphasis should be put on commercials that make smoking look gross - people pick up smoking because they think it looks cool - if we could make it look totally gross then kids might be less inclined to do it in the first place.

These warning labels are in large print on every pack of cigarettes. Do you really think that they can't read?

Personal choice and its not up to you to understand or not. BTW, have you considered how many people will die from non tobacco related illnesses and wondered why they seem to avoid that count? Planting a targeted seed in your mind is a form of brainwashing

People smoke because they want to. Not every smoker dies from a smoking related illness. I couldn't care less about the Tobacco Atlas and what it has to say. Henry Allingham, world's oldest man until his death July 19th, credited his longevity to "cigarettes, whisky, and wild, wild women". George Burns smoked 10 to 15 cigars every day for 70 years and lived past 100.

Non smokers die from lung cancer too. Every respritory illness that affects someone who smokes is automatically blamed on smoking without ever taking the time to truly find out the root cause.

Now I'm not trying to say smoking causes no harm. I quit smoking because I could feel the harm that it was doing to my breathing. It's obviously not a natural thing to inhale smoke. But I'm sick and tired of smokers being treated worse than leppers because they engage in a legal activity they enjoy. The moment they stop enjoying it then they will quit. Once you get past the first few days of cravings (which for you non smokers is equivalent to being extraordinarilly hungry, sometimes to the point of physical pain) the rest is pretty much psychological.

I still smoke occasionally, but not to the point of becoming addicted again. I enjoy the relaxing feeling, which honestly has just as much to do with deep breathing as it does with nicotine. I don't mind smoking sections, or having to go outside. I'm conscientious about others around me and where my second hand smoke goes.

Smoking starts in most cases as an act of rebelion. The more you demonize it, the more young people will try it just to say "F U. I smoke because I can."

The sight of people smoking arouses feelings of superiority in me, which I really enjoy. It immediately tells me that I'm healthier, that I'll live longer, that I can run/hike/climb/ride -- faster/farther/harder, and that I have greater willpower and strength of character.

Keep smoking. It's amazing for my self esteem.

How shallow and empty your "life" must be that the enjoyment of others makes you think you are somehow superior. Your statement alone shows that not only are you inferior as a person, but you obviously suffer from deep seeded psychological issues in regards to self image and worth.

You are still going to die, but it will likely be alone and miserable.

This is entirely true. Once the habit is formed, it's not only very hard to revert it but also difficult to get people to *care* about reverting it in the first place.

if we are being taxed for somthing that is going to kill us and are being treated like second class citizens when we smoke if it is so deadly why is it on the market and why do smokers hae to pay for medical insurance we pay enough when we buy a pack of ciggs and why is it we dont have free access to treatment for the habbit. shame on this country for alowing the sale of alchol ciggaretts and not allowing sale of any other drugs out there people get addicted to and to me they are all harmful and as an adult you should have right to put whatever harmful drug in your system and call it like it is harmful why is it only the tabacco and alchol companys hae open legale market because i can be taxed and controlled street drugs cant more people die from smoking tabaco and booze than drugs drug users are only harming themselves having to pay for supply and demand on the streets and in jail for what if were taxed an avilible like other harmful contraband so many problems whould be solved

I know what you mean. I like reading these smoking forums to see the same small group of sad sacks posting endless messages, day after day. It's like a virtual bar, populated by the same group of losers every day. Once in a while a stranger pops in, looks around and leaves.(Or maybe has the nerve to post a message and the gang goes after them.)

When I see someone with 1000s of posts to Topix, it's like they have "LOSER" tattooed on their forehead.
