Murdoch drops bid to purchase Newsday

Rupert Murdoch has dropped his bid to purchase Newsday , his spokeswoman said Saturday.

Murdock is smart enough to see a bad deal and pull out before it's too late. Also I heard that Screwsday closed it's bureau in Pakistan. Well, if I want international news I read the NYTimes. Screwsday is for people who's world consists of only Long Island.

Murdoch will probably wait until the Dolans run it into the ground and pick it up for $1.95.

Or better yet, he'll just start an internet LI newspaper with some free print distribution and put Newsday out of its misery altogether.

We may never know why Murdoch passed up. The media can tell you the color of Britany's underpants but can never give us the real reason for something happening.

Ya gotta give Murdoch credit that he's a smart man.

What we can surmise is that Murdoch was posturing, Zell is not as trustworthy as Murdoch said and Newsday is still for sale. And, I don't have a journalism degree.

I agree. Newsday has gone way down hill over the years. It started when it decided to cover Brooklyn and Queens - the armpits of the nation.

Found it kind of odd Murdoch made mention Zell is a man of his word. Why the sudden hype last week? I think Murdoch was reminding Zell of the gentlemens agreement they had. He was testing the waters to see if Zell was going to chase the bigger Cablevision offer. I think Murdoch got his answer - Zell wanted to use Cablevision to start a bidding war. Murdoch was not to be extorted.

Now its Zells turn to hold Dolan's feet to the fire. Would be funny if Cablevision suddenly lowered or withdrew their bid and Zuckerman's only interest was to make sure the Post/Newsday combo wouldn't run the Daily News out of business.

Maybe after all the buyers are gone Murdoch will sweep back in with an even lower bid. Maybe then Zell will learn what a gentlemen's agreement is all about.
