I think the family asked for too much money. It's hard to put a monetary value on your child's life and the affect on her future. But, 950 million in punitive damages was a bit outrageous.

I posted some comments the other day, and they disappeared. I posted another comment an hour ago, and it vanished. Why aren't posts kept here?
I wondered what illness the girl had before she was given Motrin, and if she had ever taken Motrin before that last time. Could her illness have been the cause of her blindess and reaction, or a combination of the illness and something in the Motrin? How is one to know if a child could be allergic to Motrin if they've never taken it before or had other allergies?

According to a prior story, she had taken the drug before with no side effects. There is no way you can guarentee anything to be 100% safe no matter how you try. Many people who experience extreme reactions to bee stings do so after having had a single bee sting previously. The body is a funny thing and you really never know what triggers some of these reactions.

The jury found that there was no lack of sufficient instructions or warnings on the label. Therefore, people take a medication at their own risk. Sometimes drugs are found to be deadly, and they are removed from the market. It's unfortunate that not all drugs are safe for everybody and will effectively treat everybody, but that's how it is.

I am so glad there was 9 intelligent people on this jury. There is no drug on the planet that is 100% safe for everyone. My father was given morphine for an injury and it killed him and I don't believe we ever thought of suing. It's just one of those unfortunate facts of life. S*it happens and it doesn't have to be someones fault. Plus asking for a billion dollars, that's just greed pure and simple.

So congratulations to the jury for using good judgement. I hope they awarded the defendents attorny fees. This could start a new trend against frivolous law suits. Could also be a start to a new day for a lot of other things. Intelligent juries, who would have guessed?

If they started putting warnings on the packaging for all of the one in a million possibilities that could occur then every box would be huge. the $1 billion suit was out of reason, $10 million would have been a no brainer. they asked for too much without enough proof that it was the only possible cause. I feel bad for the girl, but her parents made two mistakes, giving her more motrin when she showed signs of an allergic reaction, and trying to get $1 billion when they could have settled for $10 million or so. Even if they had won it wouldnt have affected enough people to make any real difference. Studies find that most parents rarely read the medication limits until after they screw up.

I know that the family is angry for what happened to thier daughter and want to blame someone for it. But let's not forget, the parents were in charge. They made the choice to give her the medication.

We have to keep in mind that all medications, either prescription or over the counter, has the potential to do harm. You don't know how your own body will react. It's unfortunate that she ended up blind but it's not the fault of the company. Millions take Motrin every day without developing Stevens-Johnson Syndrome.

Agree with R U Kidding Me

I was prescribed medication for an ear infection. That medication caused a intestinal parasitic bacterial infection which was extremely painful (similar to dysentery), had to take another medication to kill it. The pharmacist said it is a very rare reaction.

Yeah, this is just lovely. Thank you Big Pharma for doing your best to blind, harm, mame, and kill American citizens. How do you go to sleep at night? Oh yeah, I keep forgetting, you are paid by the likes of the Rockefellers and you are part of a more sinister group. Maybe the Illuminati or Freemasons?
This family, if anything, should have been awarded 5 million for medical costs. You should take responsiblity for your actions as I know you, an any ohter BIG PHARMA, are at fault.
SHAME ON YOU!!!

I do feel bad for Sabrina. Being blind or even legally blind is not fun. At least she is still alive and can still do many things.
To the parents and Sabrina: PEOPLE DO CARE just because you did not get the billion dollars you asked for does not mean nobody cares. At least hearing your case whether they you won or not made people aware of Stevens-Johnson syndrome, probably more than any label ever would have.
Whether it stops people from using Motrin I doubt it.
