Obama to scrap funding for abstinence-only programs

There are 2109 comments on the www.guardian.co.uk story from May 8, 2009, titled Obama to scrap funding for abstinence-only programs. In it, www.guardian.co.uk reports that:

President Barack Obama faces a Republican backlash over his plan to scrap one of the most divisive policies left over from the Bush era: education programs for teenagers that promote only sexual abstinence.

The decision, which emerged last night when details of Obama's budget for next year were published, will see $138m a year redirected from abstinence-only programs to "evidence-based and promising teen pregnancy prevention programs."

She must be from Cali, Colombia, where the mother-in-law must be in the room for the deflowering. How could any mother know if their kid had sex or not?
It made me wonder the same thing, did she finger check her or something? Right wing women are creepy if you ask me, my mom never tried to find out something like that about me and none of her kids got pregnant out of wedlock.

Asprin stops unwanted pregnancies....

Place an asprin between your knees and keep it in place. Should the urge to perform sex acts which may result in pregnancy be noticed, simply hold those knees tightly together and do not let the asprin become dislodged. Hold the asprin until both parties are once again fully clothed. This works for both males and females.

It is inexpensive and does not interfere with Ecumenical or Papal directions.

I guess every adolecent should be required to cary a bottle of asperin. I know I would have spent all my time as a teenager with an asperine between my legs. But lets be real here, people have sex. It is a hormonal thing. It is biology. You can't stop it. A quick look at the population models show that it is abundantly popular. If you don't want a kid, then use protection. If you don't want to get sick, then use a condum. But of course, there are no gaurantees.

You were talking about Nancy Reagan - "just say no" whatever. My post was to you. I have not mentioned Nancy Pelosi even once on Topix - I could probably start if you'd like to discuss her.

Oh, I forgot about the "Freedom From Legitimate Sex Education" clause of the First Amendment.
Apparently you haven't read the constitution or you have but you chose to riducule it - either way you show your ignorance by your response.

The constitution does not permit the federal government to engage in sex ed for school kids or funding of such - if Obama/congress were abiding by the restrictions of the constitution this whole discussion would not even exist.(not just picking on Obama for this one either - we could talk about Bush also, but that's history now)

I feel it is something which needs Government funding. Not the abstinence-only, but the programs which also teach proper use of birth control. It's not the Government teaching it, but funding for support and continued existence of educational programs. If we don't fund it, it will result in one thing only..... and that is an even much much higher rate of teen pregnancies. Pregnancies and births which will cost us far more and over a longer period of time.

Palin's kid shows we need more than "just say no". And one way to prevent teen abortion is to put some meat behind teen pregnancy prevention.
Those who want that 138 million back for abstinence-only programs should see if we can get that amount back from Iraq.
Unbelievable liberals are quick to jump on the conservatives and Sarah Palin about abstinence only. It is okay for obama to spend our money on abortions and acorn. What a hypocrite he is and you liberals are. Doesn't he make you proud? What an embarressment to our nation.

The teenage pregnancy rate is significantly down during the Bush multi-lateral approach, which includes some basic orientations to personal strength and pride that Leftists have steadfastly destroyed since the 70s.

What do Leftists and queers do? They cut funding programs that obviously work in subtle ways the Left does not understand. As usual, we now have to wait for the numbers to go back up again to see just how destructive Leftists are to everything they touch.

How is he spending our money on abortions? Are you talking about funding education which includes letting women know about ALL options open to them?

That's a load of crock. Do you want me to cut and paste those numbers up again on abstinence-only programs versus proper teaching programs? The method of teaching teens which also includes learning about birth control is by far the most successful in reducing pregnancy.

I think more money should be spent on desease prevention than pregnancy. there are a lot of things out there for pregnancy prevention! we need more desease prevention! condoms are like... the ONLY thing! lol.

You can post numbers until you're dizzy. The fact is that Bush programs reduced teen pregnancy rates.

We'll have to wait to see whether the rates go back up.

In my opinion it is not the governments job to teach children about life, sex, drugs etc...

That is and shall always be the parents responsibility. If (and yes I do know that there are a lot of irresponsible parents) it is given to the government to decide what our children know eventually they (being the government) will say that we don't know what is best for our kids and they will start mandating things that don't work, can't work, and will never work...

oh wait that's already going on... oops
